John J. Kindred

John Joseph Kindred (born July 15, 1864 in Courtland , Virginia , † October 23, 1937 in Astoria , New York ) was an American doctor, lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1911 and 1913 and between 1921 and 1929 .

Career

Private life

John Joseph Kindred was born near Courtland during the Civil War . He attended local schools, Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . He then taught in Virginia in 1886 and 1887. Kindred graduated in 1889 at the Hospital College of Medicine in Louisville ( Kentucky ) and started in the same year in New York City to practice. In 1892 he graduated from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland with a degree in mental illness . He established several psychiatric hospitals in Connecticut , New York and New Jersey . After his first term in Congress , he worked in agriculture and built houses. He graduated with a law degree in 1919 and was admitted to the bar in 1926. Kindred was again active as a doctor between 1930 and 1937 and between 1933 and 1937 as professor of forensic medicine ( medical jurisprudence ) at John B. Stetson University in DeLand ( Florida ). He died on October 23, 1937 in Astoria and was then buried in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie .

Political career

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1910 congressional election , Kindred was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded William Willett Jr. on March 4, 1911 . Since he refused to run again in 1912 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1913. He ran in New York's second constituency in 1920 for a seat in Congress. After a successful election, he succeeded Charles P. Caldwell on March 4, 1921 . He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he refused to run again in 1928 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1929.
