Daniel O'Reilly (politician)

Daniel O'Reilly (born June 3, 1838 in Limerick , Ireland , † September 23, 1911 in Bayville , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1879 and 1881 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel O'Reilly was born in Limerick a few weeks before Victoria's accession to the throne to Queen of Great Britain and Ireland . He pursued an academic career. His family immigrated to the United States in July 1856 and settled in Brooklyn . He served on the Brooklyn Board of Aldermen from 1873 to 1875 and from 1878 to 1879 . During this time he also briefly held the positions of President pro Tempore on the Board of Aldermen and Acting Mayor of the City.

In the congressional election of 1878 O'Reilly was elected as an independent Democrat in the second constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William D. Veeder on March 4, 1879 . He suffered for his re-election bid in 1880 , a defeat and withdrew from the after March 3, 1881 Congress of.

He then studied law and began practicing in Brooklyn in 1888 after receiving his license to practice law. He was then until his death on September 23, 1911 in Bayville for the tax office for 1898 traffic control ( transfer tax department ) in Kings County responsible. His body was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery in Flatbush .
