Stephen Taber (born March 7, 1821 in Dover , New York , † April 23, 1886 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1865 and 1869 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stephen Taber, son of Congressman Thomas Taber II , was born and raised in Dover six years after the end of the British-American War . He enjoyed a good education. Then he moved to Queens and went into farming. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1860 and 1861 . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1864 Taber was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded Dwight Townsend on March 4, 1865 . He was re-elected once. Since he renounced a third candidacy in 1868 , he left the congress after March 3, 1869 . In the early years of the Civil War , he helped found the Long Island North Shore Transportation Co. and served there as its president for several years. He was the director of the Long Island Rail Road . In 1876 he became the first president of Roslyn Savings Bank , a position he held for several years. He died on April 23, 1886 in New York City and was then interred in Roslyn Cemetery , Roslyn .
