Steven Derounian
Steven Boghos Derounian (born April 6, 1918 in Sofia , Bulgaria , † April 17, 2007 in Austin , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1953 and 1965 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Steven Derounian was the son of Armenian parents. At the age of three he came to Mineola , New York with his family . He attended the public schools in his new home. In 1938 he graduated from New York University . After a subsequent law degree at Fordham Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1942, he began to work in this profession. In July of that year he joined the United States Army . There he first graduated from an officers' school. Between October 1944 and May 1946 he was active in the military. He saw the end of the Second World War . When he left military service, he had made it to the position of captain. For his military achievements he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star . After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1948 and 1952 he was a member of the North Hempstead Borough Council.
In the 1952 congressional elections , Derounian was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded Leonard W. Hall on January 3, 1953 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1965 . This period was marked by the events of the civil rights movement and the Cold War . The Vietnam War began towards the end of his Congress period . Derounian was considered a very conservative MP and a supporter of Barry Goldwater . Since 1963 he represented the third district of his state in Congress. In 1964 he was thinly defeated by the Democrat Lester L. Wolff .
Steven Derounian was a judge on the Supreme Court of New York between 1969 and 1981 . He later moved to Austin, Texas, where he spent his old age. He died there on April 17th, 2007.
