Henry Augustus Reeves (born December 7, 1832 in Sag Harbor , New York , † March 4, 1916 in Greenport , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Reeves attended private schools in Sag Harbor, the Southampton Academy, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor for three years and then graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York , in 1852 . He studied law and was admitted to the bar. Then he worked as a public prosecutor ( attorney ). From 1858 until his death he published the Republican Watchman in Greeport. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1868 Reeves was in the first constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DCelected, where he succeeded Stephen Taber on March 4, 1869 . Since he refused to run again in 1870 , he left the Congress after March 3, 1871 . Then he returned to the newspaper business. He was a Town Supervisor in Southold Town between 1872 and 1894 . During this time he was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1887 . Then he was a member of the Lunacy Commission of New York between 1889 and 1897 . He died in Greenport on March 4, 1916 and was buried in Southampton Cemetery in Southampton .
