Southeast Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term south-east Germany is hardly used as a region name in contrast to south-west Germany .

In the 19th century, it was mostly understood to mean the parts of Austria belonging to the German Confederation . After the establishment of the empire in 1871 until the end of the Second World War , the term was mostly related to Silesia as the southern part of East Germany . Bavaria was more rarely referred to with this term than the east of southern Germany , although it has always been more common for both Silesia and Bavaria to use the state names directly. Today the auxiliary term Südostdeutschland (southern part of eastern Germany, eastern part of southern Germany) can be used for Saxony and Bavaria.
