Territory definitions

North of the former GDR and Berlin

The most common definition is based on the division of Northern Germany into the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR . According to this definition, north-east Germany consists of the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Brandenburg and parts of Saxony-Anhalt (especially the Altmark region ), which were formerly part of the GDR . Even Berlin is according to this definition in northeastern Germany .

Part of northern Germany inhabited by Slavs in the early Middle Ages

Another definition is based on the German Ostsiedlung in northern Germany, for which the spread of the East Low German language is an important feature. According to this definition, northeast Germany is the northern part of Germania Slavica . As a result, all parts of northern Germany that were inhabited by Slavs when Henry I took office are in northeastern Germany, including the parts of Schleswig-Holstein east of the Limes Saxoniae .

Northern part of the east of the German Empire

Up until the Second World War , north-east Germany was primarily understood to mean the northern part of what was then East Germany, i.e. East Prussia , the Posen-West Prussia border , Pomerania and the Brandenburg region , which today (except for the western and central part of the Brandenburg region) belong to Poland or belong to Russia . This use of the term became obsolete with the view that the Oder-Neisse border formed the eastern border of Germany.

Landscape description

All definitions have in common that northeast Germany ends in the south at the low mountain range threshold. Northeast Germany lies in the greater landscape of the North German Lowlands . On both sides of the German-Polish border lie the landscapes of Lebus , Lausitz and Oderbruch , which until 1945 belonged to the German Empire , to which Teltow and Barnim connect. From there in a north-west direction follow the Schorfheide , the Uckermark , the Ruppiner Land , the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Mecklenburg Switzerland . Lying on the Baltic coast several Bodden , islands of Usedom and Rügen , the peninsula Fischland-Zingst and the regions Vorpommern , Central Mecklenburg and West Mecklenburg , connect it to the to the east similarly structured landscapes. In the north-west of north-east Germany lies the Prignitz , in the west the Altmark , the Elbe-Havel-Winkel and the Magdeburger Börde , in the south-west the Fläming and in the south-east the Spreewald , the Lieberoser Heide and the above mentioned Lausitz. The landscape of the east of Holstein is similar to that of the neighboring Mecklenburg.
