Kabarnet is the main town of the Samors, a subgroup of the Tugen , in Baringo County in Kenya with 10,191 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2006).

history

The place arose when the British colonial administration at the beginning of the 19th century determined the typical scattered settlement to be the administrative center of the Baringo district.

The name recalls an African Inland Mission missionary from Wellington , Australia named Albert E (dmond) Barnett, who came to Eldama Ravine , Rift Valley , Kenya in 1908 . Ka means in Swahili house so Kabarnet House Barnet . (Barnett was spelled with a two T!) Together with his Swedish wife Elma, née Nisher, he founded a children's home in the Baringo district, which is now named after Elma Barnett.

geography

The city is located in the rural, semi-arid, but still fertile highlands at an altitude of 1815 meters in the eastern corner of the Kerio Valley in northeast Kenya. From the road from Marigat down the Tugenberge you have terrific views over the East African Rift Valley , which is part of the Great Rift Valley, to the Baringo and Bogoria Lakes and further down into the Kerio Valley .

The town

The urban area covers 92 km². Kabarnet received city rights in 1984. In 1992 it became a municipality (independent of the district administration, "district-free"). The larger urban area has about 30,000 inhabitants. The city has had a coat of arms since 1993. The economy includes light and home industry, especially in the processing of agricultural products, as well as a slaughterhouse.

There is a well-developed school system with seven kindergartens for 3 to 6 year olds, 20 primary schools (8 levels), a special school for deaf children and a school for the physically handicapped. In addition, there is a Kabarnet-Hürth-Mittelschule founded with the help of the German twin town , three high schools with boarding character (three levels with the offer of “German as a foreign language”) as well as two job-oriented Politechnics and a Medical Training Center (MTC) at the district hospital.

The dusty heights of Kabarnet has well-paved access roads and a few impressive buildings and several banks. The good infrastructure is explained by the fact that ex-President Daniel arap Moi was born in the vicinity.

museum

The Kabarnet Museum in the former residence of the district administration shows local and traditional culture and offers information on the nature and environment of Lake Baringo in a small nature park.

Daughters and sons of the city

Twin town

Kabarnet has been twinned with the German city of Hürth since June 28, 1988 . It was initiated by the city of Hürth on the basis of the Cologne appeal in 1985 and the previous report by the North-South Commission under Willy Brandt . The city and the partnership association have supported the development of the city of Kabarnet in various ways; the schools and the modern facilities of the central slaughterhouse and health center were built with the help of Hürth among others. A small part of this aid is provided by the city, but to a large extent by the partnership association, which seeks donations in kind, the Hürth schools (for example through sponsored runs ) and private individuals. For example, money is being collected for one of the women’s projects there, which aims to provide each woman with a cow.
