It is legally defined as a planning region, ie a sub-area for regional state planning in Germany , which is to be drawn up by a regional planning association.

The area had 483,939 residents as of June 30, 2008. The center of the region is the state capital Schwerin . Other important cities are Wismar , Parchim , Ludwigslust , Hagenow and Grevesmühlen .

West Mecklenburg is characterized by the hilly old and young moraines of the Baltic ridge with interspersed inland lakes from the Vistula ice age. On the Baltic Sea there are cliffs, the Lübeck Bay and the Wismar Bay with the island of Poel and, as a seaside resort, Boltenhagen . In the northeast, West Mecklenburg merges into the Middle Mecklenburg region . In the southeast there is a smooth transition to the Mecklenburg Lake District .

Reorganization of the counties

West Mecklenburg as the originally planned district of the district reform in 2009

According to the decision of the state parliament on April 5, 2006, there should be a large district of West Mecklenburg with the district town of Schwerin from October 1, 2009 . This great district should include the previous districts of Ludwigslust , Northwest Mecklenburg and Parchim as well as the previous independent cities of Schwerin and Wismar . According to the judgment of the Land Constitutional Court of July 26, 2007, the reform law cannot be implemented in the form planned so far, as it is incompatible with the Land's constitution.
