history

From the 13th century until today

Principality of Ratzeburg with the capital Schönberg, western exclave of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Map: 1866–1934)

Schönberg was first mentioned in a document in 1219 as Sconenberge . It became the residence of the bishops of Ratzeburg at the beginning of the 14th century under Bishop Markward von Jesowe . The Bishopric of Ratzeburg, general Country Boitin called, fell after the Thirty Years' War as a Principality of Ratzeburg to Mecklenburg and was from 1701 to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

The districts of Malzow (as Malsowe ) and Rupensdorf (as Rubenestorp ) were mentioned for the first time in 1194 in the Isfried partition agreement .

During the Wars of Liberation , on September 4, 1813, Schönberg was the scene of a skirmish between the retreating French troops under François Antoine Lallemand and soldiers of the Hanseatic Legion under Major Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig von Arnim-Suckow , who fell at Wesloe the following day. In the course of this, the French troops destroyed the bridge over the Maurine and set the houses on the road leading to the bridge on fire. 21 houses were destroyed.

In 1822 Schönberg received city rights as the main town and administrative seat of the exclave . After the unification of the empire in 1871, Schönberg was in the economic shadow of neighboring Lübeck.

In 1934 the offices of Grevesmühlen and Schönberg were merged to form the district of Schönberg in the course of the reunification of the two Mecklenburgs , the seat of the district administration was Schönberg.

The district administration was relocated to Grevesmühlen , 20 kilometers to the east, in 1949 .

Due to its location on the inner-German border , the city was hit hard and has been slowly recovering since reunification. The old town center was thoroughly renovated from 1994 with the help of urban development funding.

In August 2018, Schönberg hit the headlines nationwide because strangers had twice painted swastikas on a spot in the village where a Syrian child had previously died in an accident.

From 1952 to 1994 Schönberg belonged to the Grevesmühlen district (until 1990 in the GDR district of Rostock , 1990–1994 in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Since 1994 the city has been in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg .

Incorporations

On April 1, 1937, the municipality of Schönberg was incorporated into Schönberg and on April 1, 1938, the municipality of Bauhof Schönberg was incorporated into Schönberg. On July 1, 1950 the communities Groß Bünsdorf, Klein Bünsdorf, Kleinfeld and Rupensdorf and on January 1, 1951 Petersberg were incorporated. On January 1, 2019, the Lockwisch community was incorporated into the city of Schönberg. Until then, Lockwisch was administered by the office of Schönberger Land, based in the city of Schönberg.

After the local elections in 2004, Michael Heinze ( Die Linke ) was mayor of the city. With over 72% of the votes cast, he was re-elected in the local elections on June 7, 2009. When it became known that Heinze, in addition to his previous function as commander of the border troops of the GDR, was also an unofficial employee of the Ministry for State Security until 1989 , he was removed from his office on July 14, 2009 by the city council (majority decision). The above-mentioned processes were reviewed by the state's interior ministry from August 2009. On November 12, 2009, Lutz Götze (Die Linke) was elected deputy and thus incumbent mayor. The Schwerin administrative court then ruled on June 9, 2011 that the mayoral election 2009 was valid. Heinze could therefore return to his office.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the city of Schönberg
Blazon : "In a shield divided by blue, gold and red, a red heart shield, inside a silver high cross, overlaid by a golden crown."

The coat of arms was redrawn by Michael Zapfe in 1997 in the course of the flag approval, after the coat of arms drawing by Carl Teske (1884), and registered under the number 139 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms was drawn by Carl Teske in 1884 based on the seal image of the city of Schönberg from 1822. With the heart shield, the coat of arms of the former Principality of Ratzeburg, it reminds of Schönberg's earlier affiliation to the Principality that emerged from the secularized Stiftsland of the Diocese of Ratzeburg in 1648. The tinging of the places on the main shield refers to the Mecklenburg state colors and thus to Schönberg's affiliation with Mecklenburg.
Historical coat of arms
Coat of arms of the city of Schönberg 1943–1945
Blazon : "In red a silver Tyr rune emerging from the lower edge."

The coat of arms was designed by Hans Herbert Schweitzer . It was awarded on October 1, 1943 by the Reichsstatthalter in Mecklenburg.

Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms lost its validity soon after the end of World War II.

flag

The flag was designed by the Weimar heraldist Michael Zapfe and approved on October 22, 1997 by the Ministry of the Interior.

The flag is evenly striped lengthways of blue, yellow and red. In the middle of the yellow stripe, at a quarter of the height of the blue and red stripes, is a red shield with a floating white high cross, which is topped with a yellow princely crown becomes. The length of the flag is related to the height as 3: 2.
