Markward von Jesowe (effective from 1296; † April 4, 1335 ) was bishop of the Ratzeburg diocese .

Life

Markward came from the nobility in the county of Schwerin and has been recorded as the Ratzeburg canon since 1296, and as the thesaurary of the cathedral chapter since 1306 . From 1309 until his death he was Bishop of Ratzeburg. The origins of the efforts of the Ratzeburg bishops to round off the area of ​​the diocese in the state of Boitin by rounding off falls during his term of office . At the same time, the preservation of old rights together with the North Elbe bishops of Lübeck and Schwerin vis-à-vis the Archdiocese of Bremen during Jens Grand's tenure .

He moved the residence of the Ratzeburg bishops from Dodow to Schönberg . A conflict with the Hanseatic city of Lübeck arose from the accompanying fortification of the new bishopric in Schönberg, which violated Lübeck's imperial freedom of liberty from 1226. This controversy was compared in 1330 through extensive softening.

His seal can be found on panel 35 of the Mecklenburg seal from the first half of the 14th century in Mecklenburgisches Urkundenbuch vol. 10. Bishop Markward was buried in the Ratzeburg Cathedral , where his gravestone has been preserved in the tower hall.
