Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig von Arnim-Suckow chose the soldier profession, as was customary at the time in the nobility. He became a cavalry officer in the Prussian army . When the war against Napoleon broke out in 1806, he was a lieutenant in the Prittwitz-Hussar regiment . As his superior Kall in a report dated May 15, 1808 to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. on the occasion of the examination of the behavior of all Prussian officers in the lost war against France reported, Arnim had done particularly bravely. Literally it says in this report:, ... Lieutenant von Arnim threw himself very well into the enemy near Biezun on December 23, 1806, was wounded in the eye, which he lost, fell from his horse, but was rescued .. .. '.

Soon afterwards, Lieutenant General Anton Wilhelm von L'Estocq , who had meanwhile been promoted to staff commander, suggested to the king that Arnim should be awarded the order Pour le Mérite . With the highest cabinet order of July 2nd, 1807, King Arnim awarded this medal. In it it says ... With your report of 29. M. The lists of your corps have been sent to me .... I also approve .... the staff commander von Arnim .... because of their praiseworthy behavior the VO .... '.

Friedrich Wilhelm von Arnim-Suckow continued to serve in the Prussian army. At the outbreak of the Wars of Liberation in 1813 he was a major . He joined the Hanseatic Legion as leader of the cavalry, which tried in vain to defend Hamburg against the French troops under Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout . After the evacuation of Hamburg, the Legion withdrew to Mecklenburg , but continued to fight against the French troops. While trying to free Lübeck, Arnim fell in a battle near St. Gertrud . He was honored by erecting a stele with an inscription honoring him. In addition to the order Pour le Mérite, he was also a member of the Order of St. John . His body was buried in the Laurentius Church in Schönberg .

Arnimstrasse in Lübeck is named after him.
