history

From the 12th century until today

Small was in 1178 in a document from Pope Alexander III. mentioned the first time. The Schwedenschanze as a star-shaped weir system dates from the 17th century. The place gained importance as a railway junction. In 1848, little ones got a connection to the Ludwigslust – Wismar railway line .

The doctor Armin Steyerthal opened the hydropathic institute on Lake Schwerin in 1895. The "therapeutic gymnastics institute" should serve to "heal damage of all kinds of bones, muscles and joints of the body, stiffening and curvature." At the lake, an "air and sunbath" should be created on a beach promenade. For this purpose, the egg tunnel was built under the railroad tracks in 1896 , to make it easier for pedestrians to get from the sanatorium to the lake. From its southern end, the planned promenade was to lead along the north shore of Lake Schwerin over the Schwedenschanze to the Brusenbecker mill in Moidentin.

In the turmoil after the First World War , the spa was closed. Since then, there have been no bathing facilities that are typical of a spa . The fact that the place is still allowed to use the suffix “ Bad ” is due to a special regulation of the “Law on Recognition as a Health Resort and Recreation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania” of 2000. It determines for the addition “Bad” before place names that communities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania may continue to use this add-on for an unlimited period of time if they can be shown to have used it on February 26, 1993.

On June 27, 1993 a police operation in the train station tried to arrest the RAF terrorists Birgit Hogefeld and Wolfgang Grams . During the campaign, there was an exchange of fire in which the GSG-9 -Beamte Michael Newrzella was killed and Grams suspected suicide committed. The station building was demolished in 2017.

The Hoppenrade manor, a neo-Renaissance brick building from 1853 with a tower and partially with a mezzanine floor , was demolished in 2001.

From 1952 to 1994 Bad Kleinen belonged to the district of Wismar-Land (until 1990 in the GDR district of Rostock , 1990–1994 in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Since 1994 the community has been in the Northwest Mecklenburg district .
