The station Bad kids in the same community is one of the oldest and most important railway stations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and also a railway junction where the routes to and from Wismar , Grevesmühlen / Lübeck , Schwerin and Bützow / Güstrow / Rostock converge.

history

The town of Kleinen (the addition "Bad" was awarded in 1915) got its train station in 1848 with the extension of the Hagenow Land – Schwerin railway to Wismar, which had opened a year earlier . When planning the subsequent railway line to Rostock , the decision was made not to use the direct route from Schwerin, which would have required a crossing of Lake Schwerin. After Hagenow Land , Kleinen became Mecklenburg's second railway junction. In 1870 a line was added from Lübeck via Grevesmühlen.

The station was rebuilt around 1920. Previously, there were house platforms on both sides of the reception building between the tracks, the other platforms could be reached by crossing the tracks. Then the tracks were laid directly on the building. The platforms at the house were omitted during the renovation, instead island platforms were created that could be reached through a tunnel.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the east-west route Hamburg – Lübeck – Bad Kleinen – Bützow and on to Stettin or to the ferries in Warnemünde and Saßnitz has been the most important connection via the train station. After the Second World War and the division of Germany, the station became important for passenger and freight traffic from the south of the GDR via Magdeburg – Wittenberge to Rostock and Wismar. From 1980 the marshalling yard was partially automated with RTE ( shunting equipment ), electrodynamic track brakes (EDG) of the type FEW were installed in two scales of 20 m each. In the following track harp, three-force brakes of the type FEW were installed in staggered directions as directional brakes and individually as slope compensation brakes. This increased the shunting capacity to around 500 freight wagons per day. A computer-controlled interlocking on the lake side regulated the semi-automatic approach operation. After 1995 the marshalling yard was gradually dismantled. Today there is still a workshop, which was intended for the central processing of the EDG of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, into which a heavy current master's shop (Stm) then moved, on the lake side.

Switchboard

On April 3, 1975, the GDR's 300th track diagram signal box went into operation in the station. It replaced several mechanical signal boxes . In 1985 the station and the lines to Bützow – Rostock, Wismar and Schwerin – Magdeburg were electrified. On 12 April 1986 the Central was celebrated there as part of FDJ - youth object "route electrification" to 1000. Since 1981 electrified kilometers of track in the GDR. The commemorative plaque fell victim to the changes in the early 1990s. The electrification from the Magdeburg area to Wismar was primarily used for the export of potash via the Wismar seaport.

The station became famous in 1993 when the police tried to arrest the RAF terrorists Birgit Hogefeld and Wolfgang Grams . Grams shot the GSG-9 officer Michael Newrzella on one of the platforms and then committed suicide there. ( GSG-9 deployment in Bad Kleinen ).

When the timetable changed in December 2008, the stop in Bad Kleinen was canceled for almost all Intercity trains. Until then, Bad Kleinen had been the stopping point for most long-distance trains throughout its existence .

From 2011 to 2013, the track systems (ballast bed and sleepers) at the station were renovated. Since then, the station can be driven through at 100 km / h. Work on the fundamental redesign of the station facilities began in autumn 2016. A barrier-free overpass and a new platform are planned. From January to March 2017, the station building, the locomotive shed and the other buildings on the island were completely demolished. The demolition of the historic train station ensemble met with a mixed response from the public. The renovation work was completed in December 2018.

Situation before the renovation in 2016/2017

Bad Kleinen train station, platform 3/4. (Summer 2008)

The station is an island station . The station building was located between the island platforms 1/2 (serving mainly traffic in the direction of Wismar and Rostock) and 3/4. Platform 5 could be reached via platform 4, was removed after 2000 and temporarily restored for renovation at the end of 2016. The tracks on this side are mainly used for traffic in the direction of Schwerin and Lübeck.

The station is on a hillside between the village and Lake Schwerin . This resulted in a structural peculiarity: until the mid-1980s, access to the station was via a footbridge from the forecourt over the tracks to the first floor of the reception building, which is at the same level, and via a staircase inside the building to the ground floor.

There were no platforms at the station building; all platforms could only be reached through a platform tunnel. With the electrification work, the footbridge was torn down and the tunnel was extended to the west, from where a staircase to the station forecourt was built. A few steps in the tunnel revealed the boundary between the older and the newer part. There was no direct exit to Lake Schwerin. The egg tunnel to the west of the station serves this purpose .

Ticket offices and restaurants in the station building were closed in the 1990s.

The station building and most of the structures in the train station date from the 19th century. This also included a building built in 1880 that contained a water tower and an engine shed. There was a post office building and another service building between the station building and the engine shed. The outer condition of the platforms has remained practically unchanged since the renovation in 1920.

After the renovation in 2017

Platform in April 2018

After the renovation, two island platforms remain, which can be reached via a pedestrian bridge. Elevators lead from the bridge to the platforms, which allows Deutsche Bahn to rate the station as barrier-free since December 9, 2018 . The island platforms are covered over a short stretch. There are no longer any catering facilities or toilets. Instead of the previous building, there is an open space between the two platforms. A direct exit towards Lake Schwerin is still not planned.

with individual additional trains between Rostock and Schwerin
DB Regio Nordost Locomotive + 5 double-deck cars
RE 2 Cottbus - Berlin - Nauen - Wittenberge - Ludwigslust - Schwerin - Bad Kleinen - Wismar Every two hours East German Railway Stadler KISS
RE 4 Lübeck - Bad Kleinen - Blankenberg - Bützow - Pasewalk - Szczecin / Ueckermünde Every hour between Lübeck and Bad Kleinen,

Every two hours until the end of 2015 there was a clock node at which the RE Wismar-Berlin, Rostock-Hamburg and Bad Kleinen-Lübeck and their respective counter-trains meet in the station and connections were made in all directions. Since 2015, trains from Ludwigslust have only reached Bad Kleinen station after the node time, so they no longer have any connections. Connections from Schwerin are reached every two hours with the RE 1, to the other points there is a new shuttle line RB 18 between Schwerin and Bad Kleinen. The operator of the RE 2 line is the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahngesellschaft (ODEG), the other lines (as of 2020) are operated by DB Regio .

Long-distance transport

The station is served in the morning by an ICE train from Stralsund towards Karlsruhe and in the late afternoon by the counter train from Karlsruhe. In addition, an intercity train pair stops between Hamburg and Rostock or Stralsund in Bad Kleinen. In the summer, a pair of intercity trains on the Warnemünde- Rostock- Magdeburg - Leipzig - Dresden route stops .
