The Bützow train station in the town of Bützow in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is served by local and long-distance traffic. It is located on the Bad Kleinen – Rostock railway line and is the starting point for the route to Stettin .

Location and facilities

The train station is located 1.7 kilometers southeast of the city center near the Warnow Valley on Landesstraße 11. To the northeast, the Bützow-Güstrow Canal, bridged by tracks, runs on its last meters before it flows into the Warnow.

The representative reception building was built in the neo-renaissance style in 1879. It has two two-storey corner towers and a single-storey middle section with a central projection. It's west of the tracks. Track 1 is right next to the building, tracks 2 and 3 on a central platform that can be reached through a pedestrian tunnel. Both platforms are covered. The station is not barrier-free (as of 2020). To the east of the platforms there are other train tracks that are not used for passenger traffic.

The station with the individual objects: reception building, platform , goods handling building , social building, water tower, locomotive shed with turntable, water pump, former gas works, single-storey outbuilding on the southeastern border of the station area, signal box, storage facility and small workshop building is on the list of monuments of the state of Mecklenburg -Vorpommern.

history

First station building from 1850

The Bützow train station began operating on May 13, 1850 with the opening of the railway lines (Bad) Kleinen – Rostock and the branch line to Güstrow. The first station building, a locomotive shed, a wagon shed, a water house and two shelters were built by 1849. At Wolken, a district of Bützow, the diversion of the Nebel river was necessary. The first train, which still had sleepers and rails loaded, entered the station with great public interest on November 26, 1849. One day before passenger traffic began, the route was inaugurated. Initially, two pairs of trains ran on the Rostock – Hagenow route and three on the Bützow – Güstrow route.

The railway line in the direction of Güstrow was extended to Neubrandenburg until 1864 and to Strasburg until 1867 , increasing the importance of the station as a transport hub. The construction of the Bützow-Güstrow Canal made it necessary to convert the Bützow railway systems. The station was originally a wedge station in which the Güstrow route branched off to the southeast from the route to Kleinen . After the reconstruction, the route to Güstrow was re-routed on an approximately three-kilometer-long section and has since branched off eastwards from the route to Rostock. A path now runs along the old route.

During the renovation, the reception building was replaced by a neo-renaissance building built in 1879 and expanded in 1892/93. In the corner buildings were the officers' apartments, in the middle section there were service rooms, the counter hall and the waiting rooms, which were separated by class.

The route reconstruction made direct trips from Hamburg and Lübeck to Güstrow and Stettin possible. In the years up to 1945, this relationship developed into the most important long-distance connection via the Bützow train station.

Once there were two mechanical interlockings , of which interlocking B was preserved in 1992, but was only used to control the railroad gates. Further functions were transferred to the Bützow track diagram signal box , which went into operation in 1970, until 1972 . In 1986/87 the Bad Kleinen – Schwaan and Bützow – Güstrow sections were electrified.

After the fall of the Wall , the facade of the reception building was restored. With the installation of modern train destination displays in May 2009, the remaining service staff was withdrawn from the station. The optical and acoustic passenger information has since been controlled from Rostock. In 2014 the station building was acquired by a private person from the area.

In Bützow there was one of the few superstructures of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . Its extensive facilities are located on the tracks in the direction of Bad Kleinen. Today the Bützow Rail Center is located there.
