SMA und Partner AG , based in Zurich, is an internationally active Swiss consultancy for public and private transport companies .
The company is considered a leader in traffic planning , especially in the field of rail transport . The name SMA of the company founded in 1987 by Werner Stohler, Martin Meister and Hans Rudolf Akermann consists of the initials of the three company founders, who had previously carried out conceptual preparatory work for the establishment of the Zurich transport network .
Integral clock traffic
In Germany , the SMA played a decisive role in the introduction of cycle timetables in rail-based passenger transport. The company transferred the Swiss area cycle introduced in 1982 to German conditions and developed ITF networks for numerous German federal states. The first nationwide cycle schedule was launched in 1994 with the Rhineland-Palatinate cycle . Previously SMA 1993 was the Allgäu-Schwaben-clock triggered the 1996 national Bayern clock has been expanded. SMA also played a leading role in the planning of the Baden-Württemberg Drei-Löwen-Takt (since 1996) and the North Rhine-Westphalian NRW-Takt (since 1998). SMA + Partner was also commissioned to convert the Munich S-Bahn network to a uniform minute of symmetry from December 12, 2004.
In France, too, SMA supported the Réseau Ferré de France in developing a regular schedule, first in the Rhône-Alpes region , then in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , Upper and Lower Normandy and Burgundy regions .

IT services
In addition to project work, SMA und Partner also creates various software tools for the computer-aided creation of timetables , line network plans and vehicle schedules . In particular, these tools are based on a visualization of the results. One of these output options is, among other things, the network graphic , in which a cycle timetable is shown schematically with the corresponding arrival and departure minutes. The Swiss Railway Review uses this type of timetable display every year to show the current cycle timetable for Switzerland on a DIN A2 poster.
