Charleston Navy Yard
The Charleston Naval Shipyard was on the west bank of the Cooper River location construction and repair yard of the US Navy in North Charleston , South Carolina . It was founded as a dry dock in 1909 and was operated by the Navy until 1996. It was then rented to Detyens Shipyards, Inc. in the course of reducing capacity .
The shipyard was the first to produce the destroyer USS Tillman (DD-135), and expanded production in the 1930s. A total of 21 destroyers were laid down in the Charleston Navy Yard.
More recently, a 340 acre area of the previous base is being revitalized as a green hub for the city of North Charleston. The construction project is called The Navy Yard . The foundation stone was laid in 2005.
