The Lostener See is located 1.5 kilometers north of the Schwerin Outer Lake in the municipality of Bad Kleinen in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The Wallensteingraben , which connects the Schweriner See with the Wismar Bay , flows through the water from south to north . There is mainly dense wood on the bank. The Bad Kleinen – Wismar railway runs along the west bank . Directly accessible places are on the east bank. There are isolated reeds on the south and north banks.
The connection to Lake Schwerin was created artificially from 1531 with the aim of making it navigable. A brook called Steffine and draining towards the Baltic Sea was originally already there.
