About this picture

Hohenkirchen is a municipality in the north of the district of Northwest Mecklenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Germany). It is administered by the Klützer Winkel office based in the town of Klütz .

The community Hohenkirchen was formed on January 1, 2005 from the previously independent communities Groß Walmstorf and Gramkow .

geography

Hohenkirchen lies between the Hanseatic city of Wismar and the Klützer Winkel . The municipality has an approximately eight kilometer long section of the Wismar Bay ( Baltic Sea coast ) - the southern and eastern part of the Wohlenberger Wiek and the western part of the Eggers Wiek . These two shallow bays are separated by the Hohe Wieschendorfer Huk cape .

Hohenkirchen is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Zierow in the northeast, Gägelow in the southeast, Grevesmühlen in the southwest, Warnow in the west and Klütz in the northwest.

The districts of Alt Jassewitz, Beckerwitz, Gramkow, Groß Walmstorf, Hohenkirchen, Hohen Wieschendorf, Manderow, Neu Jassewitz, Niendorf, Wahrstorf and Wohlenhagen belong to Hohenkirchen.

history

Hohenkirchen : The name comes from a high-altitude church that can be seen from afar; the current brick building was built in the 15th century.
In 1230 Hohenkirchen and most of the places in what is now the municipality were first mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register , which lists the villages that were then part of the Ratzeburg diocese according to parishes . The initially free peasants became serfs to the landlords from the knighthood in the following centuries .

Agriculture still plays a major role in the municipality today. From the end of the 1960s, tourism began to develop, particularly in the coastal areas; this process continues unabated and has intensified since 1990. In addition to existing hotels, guest houses and a campsite, there is a golf course available for holidaymakers . The marina in the Hohen Wieschendorf district is currently being expanded.

Jassewitz was incorporated on July 1, 1950.

Manderow was first mentioned in 1228 as the summer residence of the Bishop of Ratzeburg . The property was u. a. owned by the Ditmer (from 1715) and Martienssen (1799–1945) families. The neo-baroque , two-storey, 15-axis mansion was built on the foundations of the castle from the 16th century in 1925 . Manderow was incorporated on July 1, 1950.

Wahrstorf: The landowner was u. a. the Keding family (1855–1945). The renovated, single-storey, 10-axis manor house was acquired after 1990 by Günther Fielmann and then by Bernhard Reemtsma.

coat of arms

Hohenkirchen coat of arms
Blazon : “In gold, a raised, strongly curved blue tip, covered with a gold-billed silver pelican growing out of a golden nest, which chops open its chest to nourish its three seated, gold-billed silver boys; at the top in front a red anchor with a w-shaped rope; back eleven red balls (4: 3: 2: 2). "

The coat of arms was designed by the Weimar heraldist Michael Zapfe . It was approved on December 17, 2004 by the Ministry of the Interior and registered under the number 293 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms is mainly based on the coat of arms of the former municipality of Gramkow, which was approved in 1999. Only in the crest field with the balls has their number increased from 7 to 11. The main motif of the coat of arms, the pelican feeding its young, is part of the decoration of a pulpit of the church in Hohenkirchen that was newly built in 1739. In mythology, the pelican is a symbol of sacrifice. In Christian iconography, it represents an image of Christ as Savior. The pelican thus stands pars pro toto for the 15th century church. The pelican also symbolizes fishing, which has always been of great importance as a livelihood for the residents. The anchor is intended to symbolize both the fishing that has always been carried out in some districts and the former small fishing port in Beckerwitz. At the same time, it stands for the newly emerging marina and thus for tourism. The spheres - borrowed from the von Bülow family's coat of arms in a different tinging and reduced number - symbolize the 11 districts by means of numerical symbols, but also remind of the former landlords who determined the development of the region for centuries.
