Gottfried Timm (born June 26, 1956 in Hohenkirchen ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1998 to 2006 he was Minister of the Interior of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

biography

Family, education and work

After attending the Polytechnic High School in Rostock , Timm began an apprenticeship in 1973, which he completed in 1976 as a construction worker with a high school diploma. He also worked as a volunteer sailing instructor. He then did military service in the National People's Army until 1978 . Then Timm began studying Protestant theology at the University of Halle (Saale) , which he finished in 1983. This was followed by research studies in Halle and Rostock until 1986. In 1987 his dissertation A was carried out at the University of Rostock with the thesis The Salvation Church in the World - on the ecclesiology of the Johannes apocalypse . From 1986 to 1990 Timm was pastor in Röbel / Müritz .

Since the beginning of 2014 he has been the managing director of the Kirchliche EnergieWerk , which he also founded .

Timm is divorced and has two children and three grandchildren.

In October 1989 Timm was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SDP) . From 1990 to 1996 he was a member of the SPD state executive in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and from 1995 to 1999 also the SPD federal executive. From 1999 to 2005 he was deputy chairman of the SPD regional association Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

From March to October 1990 Timm belonged to the first freely elected People's Chamber in the GDR and was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group .

Between 1990 and 2011 he was a member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In 1998 , 2002 and 2006 he was directly elected in the Schwerin I state electoral district. In the state parliament he was parliamentary manager of the SPD parliamentary group from 1990 to 1994 and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 1998 Timm was group spokesman for domestic and legal policy. From 2006 to 2011 he was parliamentary group spokesman for environmental protection and climate protection policy and, from 2008, chairman of the parliament's interior committee.

Public offices

After the state elections in 1998, Timm was appointed Minister of the Interior in the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania led by Prime Minister Harald Ringstorff on November 3, 1998 . After the state election in 2006, Timm left office on November 7, 2006. On September 14, 2008, Timm ran for the SPD for election as Lord Mayor of the city of Schwerin and received 38.1% of the votes. Like competitor Angelika Gramkow (38.2%), he had to face a runoff election on September 28, in which he lost with 49.5% of the vote.
