The Project Management Institute ( PMI ) is a global project management association founded in the United States of America .

The PMI was founded in 1969 outside of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , USA . The establishment of the Institute's statutes by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania marks the beginning of the Institute's activities. That same year, the first seminars and symposiums were held in Atlanta , Georgia with 83 attendees. At the end of 2019, the PMI had more than 591,000 members with over 300 local organizations (chapters) in over 200 countries. PMI is the project management organization with the largest number of members worldwide and has been the publisher of the “ Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge ” (PMBOK Guide) and other standards for project, program and portfolio management since 1996 . The PMBOK Guide is both an American ANSI standard and the basis for the ISO 21500 standard.

The PMI offers several individual certifications :

  • Since 1984: A Project Management Professional ( PMP ® , project management expert) must - depending on the training - have specific training and relevant experience of at least 3 years / 4,500 hours or 5 years / 7,500 hours (within the last eight years) in the field of project management . He has passed an exam that checks project management skills according to the PMI standard. In addition, he has agreed to follow the rules of the PMI Professional Code (“ Code of Conduct ”).   • since 2007: Program Management Professional ( PgMP ® )
    According to PMI, program management is the centralized, coordinated management of a group of projects to achieve a strategic program objective. In order to obtain certification as a PgMP, one must prove at least four years of professional experience as a project and program manager, pass an examination on knowledge and techniques of program management and undergo a performance evaluation by a group of colleagues and experts.

  • Disciplined Agile The Disciplined Agile Consortium (DAC) is part of the Project Management Institute and offers various certifications: Disciplined Agilist (DA), Certified Disciplined Agilist (CDA), Certified Disciplined Agile Practitioner (CDAP), Disciplined Agile Lean Scrum Master (DALSM) , Certified Disciplined Agile Coach (CDAC) and Certified Disciplined Agile Instructor (CDAI)

Other project management organizations

In addition to the PMI, there are other project management organizations, the two best known are the International Project Management Association (IPMA) based in the Netherlands with its national representatives (including the German GPM , Project Management Austria, IPMA-USA, the British APM and the Australian AIPM) and the British AXELOS as the publisher of the project management method PRINCE2 .
