Günther Fielmann

Günther Fielmann (born September 17, 1939 in Stafstedt , Schleswig-Holstein ) is a German entrepreneur and majority shareholder of Fielmann AG . He was CEO of Fielmann AG until November 21, 2019 .

Life

Günther Fielmann was born in 1939; his father Wilhelm was a teacher (senior director), his mother a housewife. He wanted to become a photographer, but at his father's behest, he began an apprenticeship as an optician in 1956. In 1965 he graduated as a state-certified optician and master optician. He then worked for the optics groups Essilor and Bausch & Lomb. In 1972 he opened his first shop in Cuxhaven . In 1981 Fielmann revolutionized the glasses market by offering 90 fashionable models of checkout glasses without additional payment (advertising slogan: Free of charge ). With this liberalization of the market, as well as low prices and aggressive marketing, his company grew rapidly. In 1982, a Fielmann specialty shop with more than 7,000 glasses and a permanent hologram exhibition was opened in Kiel . In 1994, Fielmann was KG in the joint stock company Fielmann AG converted and to put market .

Günther Fielmann is involved in agriculture with an organic farm . He owns the approximately 1,600 hectare Schierensee estate , the 470 hectare Marutendorf estate ( Demeter operation ) in Achterwehr , the 180 hectare Möglin farm in Krummwisch and the Lütjensee farm in the Stormarn district , Schleswig-Holstein . Fielmann sells its organic products under the Hof Lütjensee brand .

As a conservationist , he is also committed to the German Forest Protection Association (SDW), in particular to their tree-planting campaigns for " Tree Day ". Since 2001, he has been supporting researchers at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel with a double-digit million sum , who are investigating the consequences of ecological agriculture on his Ritzerau farm .

In 2002 Günther Fielmann bought Plön Castle from the state of Schleswig-Holstein and had it extensively renovated. Optometrists have been trained in the castle since then, and an optometrist course has been offered in cooperation with the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences since the 2005/06 winter semester .

Every year he plants a tree for each of his employees. By May 2009 he had planted more than a million trees.

The children Marc (* 1989) and Sophie Luise (* 1994) come from the marriage with the student and later literary scholar Heike Fielmann (1988–2004 ). Both hold 9% of the company's shares and should succeed them in the long term. In mid-2012, Fielmann announced that one day his son Marc would take over the company. Marc Fielmann was promoted to the Board of Management on January 1, 2016, where he was responsible for marketing. In April 2017, the company announced that Günther Fielmann would remain CEO until the end of June 2020. On April 12, 2018, Marc Fielmann was appointed CEO alongside his father (dual leadership). On November 21, 2019, Marc Fielmann took over the sole chairmanship of the board, Günther Fielmann completed the generation change and left the board.

Honors

Günther Fielmann received the Federal Cross of Merit First Class in 2000 and was made an honorary professor by the state of Schleswig-Holstein in 2002. In 2003 he was awarded the German Founder's Prize in the Lifetime Achievement category. The Faculty of Agriculture and Nutrition at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel awarded him an honorary doctorate in December 2004. In 2011 Fielmann was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Manager Magazin . In 2016 he became an honorary citizen of Schleswig-Holstein for his work as an environmental, nature and monument protector as well as a founder and patron.

According to the Forbes list, Günther Fielmann has assets of $ 4.4 billion in 2015. This made him the 369th richest person in the world in August 2015.
