The Wohlenberger Wiek as part of the Wismar Bay

The Wohlenberger Wiek is a semicircular bay in the southwest part of the Wismar Bay on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was named after the small settlement of Wohlenberg, a district of the town of Klütz south of the bay. The Wohlenberger Wiek is delimited in the north by the former (half) island of Lieps , which extends from the Tarnewitzer Huk over three kilometers to the west. The bay has a 100 to 300 meter wide shallow water zone with depths of less than one meter, which then drops very quickly to depths of five to ten meters. On the south side, wide areas of the Wiek dry out when the water is low . South of the Tarnewitzer Huks, the only notable tributary that flows into the bay is the Tarnewitzer Bach.

The south coast of the bay forms a long, flat sandy coast with dunes . The west bank is an almost three kilometer long continuous cliff to the south of Tarnewitzer Huk with a narrow beach in front of it. There is also a low cliff on the east coast that is not continuous. These two banks are mostly stony and partly overgrown with salt reeds . There are two campsites on the east coast and a beach with a designated windsurfing area in the southern part.

Flora and fauna

Despite the barren vegetation, the bay's fauna is diverse and rich in individuals. Year-round are Wat - and water birds. A nature reserve is designated at the Tarnewitzer Huk. In the local cliffs build sand martins their burrows. There are also gray geese , gray herons and corvids , seagulls and tern species . Green ducks and mostly year-round whooper swans , curlews and mute swans can also be found in the bay. In the winter months, eider and mountain ducks also find a home here.

The well-Wiek is of Alpine beach runners , sand plovers , lapwings used and other migratory birds as Zugrast on the way to their northern breeding grounds. These bird species find enough food in the wind flats and in shallow waters in the form of crustaceans, mussels, lugworms , algae, fry and insects.
