Till Lindemann (born January 4, 1963 in Leipzig ) is a German singer and poet . Occasionally he is also active as a drummer , actor and visual artist . Lindemann is known as the front singer and lyricist of the music groups Rammstein and Lindemann .

Life

Childhood and youth

Till Lindemann grew up in Wendisch Rambow (district of Bad Kleinen ) and in Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . His father Werner Lindemann was a well-known children's book author in the GDR . His mother, Brigitte "Gitta" Lindemann, is a journalist and worked from 1992 to 2002 at Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Schwerin as head of culture at NDR 1 Radio MV. Lindemann has a sister who is six years younger than him.

Lindemann wrote his first lyrical fragments at the age of nine. In the book Mike Oldfield in the rocking chair , his father quotes the poem The Nutcracker penned by his nine-year-old son:

"He just cracks every nut, and it doesn't want to, has to."

Lindemann was a competitive swimmer in his youth, attended a children's and youth sports school and was housed in the boarding school there. He swam for the SC Empor Rostock .

After he finished seventh in the Youth European Championship in swimming over 1500 meters in 1978, he was also considered for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . However, he was denied participation because he left the hotel without permission during the European Youth Swimming Championships in Florence (depending on the information, also Rome ) and obtained "class-hostile" stickers from colleagues from Germany in the team bus. After an injury, he ended his career in 1979 and, living in a new building in Rostock -Evershagen, completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter at the Rostock housing association. Later he also worked as a basket maker , carpenter and technician.

At the age of 19 he moved in September 1982 to his father, who lived in a farmhouse in the Drispeth artists' colony in the Mecklenburg community of Zickhusen . He stayed there for nine months, and father and son did not always live together harmoniously. His father wrote about this time literarily in the book Mike Oldfield in the rocking chair. Processed notes from a father in which his son bears the name Timm . Werner Lindemann describes the excerpt from "Timm" after the same nine months in his work as follows:

The book was published for the first time in 1988 and was reprinted on Till Lindemann's initiative in 2006, but with a different cover picture: While the first published work still showed a fairly general illustration, the current cover is a photo of the Rammstein singer in which he is a wooden chair on train tracks.

After moving out of his father's house, Lindemann stayed in the vicinity of Lake Schwerin. He first moved in with an acquaintance who continued to work as a basket weaver a few villages.

First musical steps

From 1986 Lindemann was musically active in his spare time. He was the drummer in the (fun) punk band First Arsch - a short version of the First Autonomous Rioters in Schwerin - but also sang the encores there and sometimes played bass.

In 1987 he first met his later bandmates Paul Landers and Christian “Flake” Lorenz in his then home town of Hohen Viecheln . They had given a concert in the community with their band Feeling B at the time, then spent a week in Hohen Viecheln and finally turned up one night - led by a friend of Lindemann's - in his house. According to Landers and Lorenz, the heavily drunk musicians celebrated, ate and drank there without consciously noticing the host that evening. In the years that followed, the two Berliners visited Lindemann again and again and got to know him. Lindemann introduced her to her future colleague from Rammstein, Richard Kruspe , who was still called Sven at the time. Lorenz later said in an interview about his first encounters with Till Lindemann:

“He moved out very early at home and bought this house, it was a reed cottage, only half of which belonged to him. (...) Till was a basket weaver and fan (note: from Feeling B). He came to us after the concert in the Schwerin “Achteck” and we talked a little. (...) Till looked good, just such a big farmer who speaks one sentence an hour. Something like that impressed us. "

In the period that followed after getting to know each other, Landers also played a temporary role in Lindemann's band, as First Arsch did not initially have a permanent guitarist. From the point of view of the first-ass main singer Steve Mielke, Richard Kruspe is, in retrospect, the official guitarist of the group.

Musical creation since the fall of the Berlin Wall

In 1992, Lindemann released the album Saddle Up with First Ass , on which Kruspe and Landers again played alongside him and Mielke. Together with Kruspe and his roommate Oliver Riedel , Lindemann traveled to the southwest of the USA in 1993. The three friends, who were each playing in different bands at the time - Kruspe was guitarist for Orgasm Death Gimmick , Riedel bassist for The Inchtabokatables - returned impressed by the local metal scene . When Kruspe wanted to start a new music project, he thought Lindemann was an ideal cast as a singer and persuaded him to work together. Together with Riedel and Christoph Schneider - at that time drummers at Die Firma - they founded a new band under the name Tempelprayers - this would only become known some time later under the name Rammstein . The last members of the band were Paul Landers as second guitarist and Christian “Flake” Lorenz as keyboardist. According to statements by Christoph Schneider and Flake, Lindemann in particular - against the will of some other founding members - campaigned for the inclusion of the two ex- Feeling B musicians, because on the one hand he had been a fan of the band and, on the other hand, because of their popularity, there were advantages for the hoped for a new band.

Lindemann has been a trained pyrotechnician since 1996 . After explosive and fire performances became the core element of the stage show at Rammstein concerts and there were often injuries to fans and musicians in the initial phase, he acquired a so-called pyro certificate .

In 1999 he was a guest singer with the Puhdys for the piece Anger Wut doesn't want to die . In 2007 he appeared at Apocalyptica as a guest singer for a reinterpretation of the David Bowie song Heroes . The piece of music was released under the title Heroes on the album Worlds Collide . After the publication, the label Gun Records of the Finnish band had to answer to the Berlin district court for infringement of name and trademark rights and pay 45,000 euros in damages to the main band Lindemanns in the course of a settlement; the label had advertised the “Worlds Collide” album on a large scale with the addition “featuring Rammstein”, although the band was otherwise not involved.

In September 2011 Lindemann made a guest appearance in Knorkator's music video for the single Du nich .

In spring 2014 he wrote the text for I know everything for Roland Kaiser , a piece from his album Seelenbahnen .

Since 2015 Lindemann, together with the Swedish musician and producer Peter Tägtgren the alternative metal duo Lindemann , the same year in June, the album Skills in Pills published.

The US label Roadrunner Records lists Till Lindemann at number 50 on The 50 Greatest Metal Frontmen of All Time .

Poetry and visual arts

Till Lindemann has been writing poetry since 1991. Over time, he passed some pieces on to the late artist Gert Hof , who was responsible for the lighting concept at Rammstein concerts for several years from September 1996 and had already published an illustrated book about the band in 1999. He then selected from 1,000 poems those that, in his opinion, were most suitable for a book. In 2002 Till Lindemann and Gert Hof published the book of poems under the name Messer at Eichborn Verlag . He wrote the poems contained therein between 1995 and 2002 independently of his work at Rammstein . In 2013 a further volume of poetry appeared with In silent nights .

In 2014 Lindemann exhibited two sculptures and original scripts from his volume of poetry In silent nights in the Dresden gallery Holger John . In addition, original drawings by Matthias Matthies , which were included in Lindemann's volume of poems In silent nights , and the 2011 “death masks” made by the Rammstein members were exhibited.

On October 5, 2017, he and the musician and extreme athlete Joey Kelly brought out a book of photos and poetry entitled Yukon - my hated friend . The photographer Thomas Stachelhaus, who regularly portrays Kelly during his extreme sports activities, had photographed the two musicians on the Yukon during a three-week summer canoe trip that they undertook together. Kelly and Lindemann, who have been friends since the mid-1990s, performed together at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 14, 2017 to promote it.

Private life

Lindemann married early and his first daughter was born when he was 22 years old. For seven years he raised her alone. He is divorced and has a second daughter, a grandson and, according to his own statements, a son. In addition, he claims to be the godfather of the eldest son of extreme athlete and musician Joey Kelly .

From 2011 to November 2015 he was in a relationship with the actress Sophia Thomalla .

Lindemann currently owns apartments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin .

Lindemann is an active hunter and angler .

Others

In December 2019, Lindemann launched a vodka under his artist pseudonym Doktor Dick , in collaboration with the French distillery Ovin Pion Vodka , which was initially limited to 1000 pieces.

Linguistic style

Lindemann's language is always rich in images, often sensitive and romantic - anachronistic , sometimes also brutal and bloodthirsty. The latter two points can be traced back to Lindemann's image of man, which in the singer is naturalistic - archaic . In an interview in March 2006, Paul Landers , the band's rhythm guitarist , attributed the content and language of the Rammstein lyrics to Lindemann's “confused” living conditions. Literary motifs

In Lindemann's texts, a few motifs can be made out that stretch from Herzeleid to In silent nights . In general, his texts can be divided into three categories: texts that deal with experiencing suffering; those that describe the exercise of violence, which in turn leads to suffering, and those in which suffering is experienced and caused.

In texts of the latter category, longing often turns into hatred, humiliation or death, such as a halt in which a misanthrope becomes a murderer.

The lyrical self as a sufferer

When Lindemann writes from a suffering perspective, he often falls back on descriptions of nature and other romantic motifs. In the lyrics to the songs Jealousy , Adios , Nebel , Ohne dich , Roter Sand and Spring , death or the longing for death is processed. In all of these texts the lyric self, if it exists, is the victim.

Suffering and ailments are the motives in heartache , longing , mother , man against man , help me , Bückstabü and love is there for everyone , always in a completely different form, often in seemingly pathological descriptions. Here, too, the lyrical self, if it exists, can always be seen as in need of help. The feeling of inner coldness is a sub-complex of suffering and is expressed in Lindemann's texts on Seemann . In the latter two, cannibalism is addressed as an erotic fantasy or concrete implementation.
