Helge Malchow

Helge Malchow (born May 21, 1950 in Bad Freienwalde (Oder) ) is a German publisher , he was the publishing director of Kiepenheuer & Witsch from 2002 to 2018 .

Life

When Helge Malchow was three years old, his family fled from the GDR to West Germany . He grew up in Düsseldorf and Neuss . After graduating from high school in 1969, he studied German , social sciences and philosophy in Cologne . The state examination followed in 1975. From 1975 to 1977 he trained as a high school teacher . From 1977 to 1981 he was a teacher at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium Hilden in Hilden , later at the comprehensive school in Rodenkirchen . In 1981 Malchow resigned from school.

A stay abroad in Italy followed from 1982 to 1983. There Malchow worked on a doctorate in education , later literature . In 1983 he started as a trainee at Kiepenheuer & Witsch and in the same year became editor for the Kiwi paperback series. In 1984 he went to New York City as head editor for the publishing house . Since 2002 Helge Malchow has been a publisher at Kiepenheuer & Witsch; his successor has been Kerstin Gleba since January 2019 .

In 2005 Malchow was named Publisher of the Year ; the award initiated by the magazine Buchmarkt has been presented since 1994.
