Johann Peter von Raesfeld

Johann-Peter von Raesfeld (born March 26, 1679 in Wesel , † October 20, 1764 in Kleve ) was the banner lord of Geldern and Zutphen, Privy Councilor and District President of the Prussian provinces of Kleve and Mark and curator of the University of Duisburg .

Life

He was the son of Anton von Raesfeld and Christiane von Rood gt. Cost; Lord of Bronkhorst in Geldern and Claerenbeck and hereditary lord of Groß-Büllersheim and Miel (Quandt's estates) and came from the Kleve branch of the von Raesfeld family . In 1733 he was Klevian government chancellor and in 1740 extraordinary envoy for the States General under Frederick the Great, who was in negotiations with Wilhelm III. of Orange, the governor of the States General. Among them, the question of whether the Duchy of Kleve and the County of Mark belonged to the Netherlands or Brandenburg (Prussia) was decided in favor of Brandenburg after there was no longer any direct hereditary successor.

Johann Peter von Raesfeld is said to have been a clever and politically prudent person who solved the most difficult tasks, even if King Friedrich was too slow. Johann Peter von Raesfeld is often mentioned in the published “Correspondence of Frederick the Great”. For example, in Volume I of this work it says: “Raesfeld crawls like a snail”.
