Pola X (alternative title Pierre or the fight with the Sphinx ) is a French - Swiss - German - Japanese feature film by Leos Carax , which is based on the novel Pierre or the ambiguities by Herman Melville . The film was produced by Arena Films and Canal + .

Pierre lives with his mother Marie in Normandy in a castle on the banks of the Seine. Every morning he drives his motorcycle to see Lucie, his fiancée. One night Marie tells her son that she has arranged a date for his wedding to Lucie. When Pierre goes to Lucie to tell her the news, he meets a woman in the woods. She tells him: "Pierre ... you are not the only child, I am your sister, Isabelle." Pierre begins an incestuous relationship with Isabelle .

“In his fourth film, Léos Carax rarely achieves the archaic power of his earlier work. This is less due to the heterogeneity of his material than to the inability to relate. Since the gesture of wanting seems bigger than its substance, the film inevitably had to fail. "
