Patachou (* 10. June 1918 in Paris as Henriette Ragon , † the thirtieth April 2015 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French singer and actress .

biography

She grew up in Paris in the 1920s and began as a typist, later as a factory worker, shoe seller and antique dealer. In 1948 she and her husband Jean Billou took over a restaurant and cabaret in the Montmartre district . It was in this restaurant, called Pâte à choux ( choux pastry ), that she performed as a singer for the first time and was nicknamed Lady Patachou by Parisian journalists . In 1952, Georges Brassens made his first appearance in this cabaret. Patachou was also the first to interpret Brassens' chansons .

In the following years the first records were recorded by Patachou. She toured in France and worldwide. From 1953 to the 1970s, she enjoyed great success at the Palladium in London, the Waldorf-Astoria and Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as in Montreal and Hong Kong. In America she read texts in French and English. She made a total of 25 appearances on Ed Sullivan's Late Night Show . Her appearances in Japan and Sweden also received a lot of attention, and for her commitment she was named “Ambassador of French Chanson”.

In the 1950s she had a few minor appearances in movies and then, after a long break, from the 1980s onwards, she made numerous appearances in movies and especially in television productions. Her last appearance was in 2006 at the age of 88 in an episode of the television series Les Bleus, premiers pas dans la police .

Since September 1977 she was Knight of the Legion of Honor and on January 1, 2009 she was appointed Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor.
