Knorkator is a rock band from Berlin . She describes herself as Germany's most band in the world . The band name was derived from personifying the term knorke .

Career

The singer Gero Ivers, artist name “Stumpen”, completed a classical vocal training after brief violin and piano lessons. After training at a music school in Berlin-Köpenick , he was hired by the State Opera Unter den Linden and sang under the direction of the conductor Hans Pischner .

Alf Ator became aware of Stumpen's talent for singing extremely high, as Stumpen revealed in an interview on the DVD "Weg nach unten".

Knorkator was founded by Alf Ator and Stumpen in 1994 in Berlin. Both had already played together in the band Funkreich at the end of the 1980s , but separated again because of musical differences. Only when Stumpen and his band Beulshausen began to make his characteristic style of music socially acceptable at the beginning of the 1990s , Ator offered themselves as text writer and J. Kirk Thiele as guitarist. After producing their first EP A together , Thiele decided to switch to the Halmakenreuther band in 1996 .

Buzz Dee, who had previously played in bands such as Monokel , De Buff Dicks , Keks , Lanz Bulldog , XL Baur and MCB , was hired to support Rio Reiser's last tour . Eventually Knorkator was discovered by Rodrigo González , a member of The Doctors . After a gig, the band was signed to Rodrec in Berlin in 1997 and their first album, The Schlechtst of Knorkator , was produced. Knorkator won several young talent competitions in Berlin and Brandenburg, and they became known as Böse in the metal scene in particular .

After signing with Mercury Records in 2000, the band released two studio albums - Hasenchartbreaker and A Tribute to Us . For the tour for these albums, Chrisch Chrasch was the first drummer employed. Chrasch had previously been involved in the Beulshausen project with Stumpen and in the De Buffdicks group with Buzz Dee . The band gained nationwide fame when they took part in the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song Ick who zu Schwein . The next day the Bild newspaper commented: "Who let these madmen on TV?"

In the period that followed, Knorkator tried out other areas. In 2002 the book Des Wurzels Zweig was published , which was followed by an extensive reading tour. Then the Highmudleader project was founded, with Stumpen, Ator and Buzz Dee bringing out an album with weird folk music under their own label Tubareckorz . For half a year they produced a weekly program called The Communicator on the Potsdam radio station Fritz , in which the German language was the focus. Stumpen started a monthly reading and film event, with which he still reads everything under the name Stumpen, maybe sings, drinks definitely and Buzz Dee is used occasionally.

In 2003 the album Ich hasse Musik was released as a cooperation between the companies Vielklang and Sanctuary Records . Another change in personnel took place for the subsequent tour. Chrisch Chrasch was substituted for Nick Aragua , formerly Die Skeptiker , on drums. Bassist Tim Buktu, formerly Depressive Age , also joined the band. In 2004 the second book, In the beginning was the Am, was published by Eulenspiegel-Verlag . To celebrate the 11th anniversary of the band in 2005, Nuclear Blast released the DVD Too Old with collected video clips, a concert part and a documentary about Knorkator's career. In 2007 the sixth studio album was released, The Next Album Ever ( Nuclear Blast) .

In 2008 the band announced a two-year break from the band with the double DVD Weg downward (Tubareckorz).

Alf Ator published the book Die satanischen Achillesferse (Eulenspiegel Verlag) in 2009 and was on tour across Germany in 2010 with his one-man play and The Even Newer Testament (tips and tricks to become like ALF ATOR).

On November 2, 2010, singer Stumpen announced on his blog that Knorkator was back in 2011 and would “quit”. The first concert since the band split up in 2008 took place in Munich on April 8, 2011, and the second concert in Stuttgart followed the next day. Another eight concerts followed. The motto of this tour was 77 , the concerts each lasted exactly 77 minutes, which was made clear by an illuminated display during the concert.

After the release of their most successful album , it will not , and completion of the associated Hall Tour Ü77 there was again a change on drums. Nicolaj Gogow went to the band Pothead , and their drummer Sebastian Meyer joined Knorkator.

On January 17, 2014, the album We Want Mohr was released. The tour, which will take place on the occasion of the album in spring 2014, is advertised with a poster showing the five ( white ) members of the band in a saucepan on a fire that attracts the attention of a black person with bones in his hair and knife in hand, which stands next to the pot, is directed. It is a reenactment of a scene from the children's book Struwwelpeter . The poster led to a wave of outrage in some German blogs and was described as “racist”, “unreflective” and “degrading” in a statement by the Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland . In response to this, singer Gero Ivers was "shocked and disappointed" and argued that the "motive [was] misunderstood" and "not seen in context".

At the final concerts of the We Want Mohr tour in Berlin's Columbiahalle, Nicolaj Gogow was again introduced as the band's drummer.

In the first 15 years of its existence, Knorkator gave around 700 concerts and appeared at various large German festivals, such as Wacken Open Air , Rockharz Open Air , With Full Force , Highfield Festival , Force Attack , Woodstage Summer Open Air or on the bizarre festival . The musicians played as the opening act of Marilyn Manson and the Bloodhound Gang . They also played at international festivals such as the French Fury in Le Mans in 2005 and the largest European festival, the Woodstock stop in Küstrin, Poland . As a delegate, Knorkator represented the association of independent recording companies, music publishers and music producers and GermanSounds in Toronto, Canada in 2006 during the Canadian Music Week .

At Knorkator concerts it happens that keyboardist Alf Ator hits the audience with a huge foam club, large foam organs are thrown into the audience or that singer Stumpen throws a box of toasted bread into the air. Furthermore, Alf Ator's instruments consist partly of household items such as toilet brushes or toilet lids. The audience has already been “shot at” with shredded fruit and vegetables (announced as “vegetarian flight meals”). In addition, Stumpen and Alf Ator usually appear grotesquely dressed. Stumpen is also known for dangerous jumps from several meters during the performance.

As part of Popkomm 2007, Knorkator succeeded in shocking the invited guests of the official opening party by performing naked women as “keyboard stands” in the stage show.

Side projects

High mud leader

High Mud Leader (pronounced: Heimatlieder) was a side project of the rock group, which in 2002 also released a CD with parodies of hit and folk songs under this name, including rock classics such as Smoke on the Water or Still loving you .

Jesang to jitarre and sometimes oh jeije

Jesang zur Jitarre and sometimes och Jeije is a project by Stumpen and Buzz Dee who, together with the violinist Ally Storch (Ally the Fiddle, Subway to Sally , Haggard , ASP , Umbra et Imago ), recorded some songs from many decades in the Snowland in October 2010 Studios Berlin have recorded. Among other things, The Girl from Ipanema , Sunny , Take Me Home, Country Roads , These Boots Are Made for Walkin ' and the saber dance from the ballet Gajaneh by Aram Chatschaturjan were arranged . In 2011, however, the sound carrier was taken back because the publisher feared legal concerns regarding copyright. Some of the songs were not approved by the original artists.

Alf Ator's Hyper-Interactive Multimedia Show in the World

Alf Ator is also the inventor of a new form of entertainment. Together with a sometimes completely overwhelmed audience, he stages music and skits to a programmed playback. He asks individual viewers questions, which they then seem to answer, whereby they are encouraged to pretend that they are speaking by moving their mouths accordingly. Some spectators are asked to take the stage, where they receive a crash course on certain instruments, and then shine virtuously in songs performed together (mostly Knorkator songs). The usual reluctance of an audience invited to participate disappears very quickly with this type of program as soon as it becomes clear that it is almost impossible to embarrass yourself through the consistent playback. The program developed from initial book readings, which Alf Ator very soon performed in full playback and recognized the creative possibilities. The tours ran under different titles: "The still newer testament" (2009), "The secret of my beauty" (2010), "Alf Ator of Death" (2012).
