Michael Winner
Robert Michael Winner (born October 30, 1935 in London , England ; † January 21, 2013 there ) was a British film director and film producer . He also worked as a film editor under the pseudonym Arnold Crust ; he also wrote scripts.
Career
Winner was born to Jewish parents in north London. He completed his education at St Christopher School in Letchworth Garden City . He studied law and economics at Downing College at the University of Cambridge .
He began his career in the film business as an assistant director at the BBC , where he wrote screenplays. He made his directorial debut in 1960 with Shoot to Kill . At the beginning of his career he worked in England, but in the early 1970s he went to the USA . Winner made several films with Charles Bronson , including the first three parts of the Death Wish series. Another actor he worked with on multiple occasions was Oliver Reed .
He was a busy director from the 1960s to the late 1980s, with only four productions following in the 1990s.
His last directorial work was in 1998. In the following years he worked as a gastronomy critic for the Sunday Times .
Winner produced the majority of his own films himself and was also responsible for editing them under the pseudonym Arnold Crust . In 2006 his autobiography was published , entitled Winner Takes All: A Life of Sorts .
Winner was married to Géraldine Lynton from 2011 until his death. The two had known each other since 1957.
