You smell so good is a song of the German New German Hardness - band Rammstein , the first single from her album heartache and thus the debut single of the band, which was first published on August 24, 1995th It was produced by Jacob Hellner and Carl-Michael Herlöfsson.

background

You smell so good was already included on a demo tape that the band gave for a competition organized by the Berlin Senate. The song is often with the book Perfume by Patrick Süskind been linked, on which it is based. The piece was played live for the first time on April 14, 1994 in Leipzig . It quickly evolved into a song that was often played live.

Elaborate show effects were often woven in during the live performances. During the longing tour, Till Lindemann waved an arc of fire that struck sparks in all directions when Lindemann turned it around. This effect was later used on other songs as well. The song was not played on the mother tour, but it was played on the following tours.

Since the Ahoi tour for the 2004 album Reise, Reise , in addition to the bow at the beginning of the song during a guitar solo, spark-spraying nozzles have been used, which are attached to each arm of the two guitarists Richard Kruspe and Paul Landers using a sleeve-like construction . Occasionally the guitars of the two musicians were lit instead during this solo, so that they had to reach around the flames leaking on the body while playing the riff. Among other things, the effect with the burning guitars was used on March 6th and 7th, 2012 in two appearances on the Made in Germany tour. The band performed on these evenings in what was then the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy and was filmed by the Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund . The resulting concert film Rammstein: Paris was released in 2017.

On April 17, 1998, the song was re-released as Du riechst so gut '98 and only hit the charts as a result.

Music videos

In the first music video, which was very simple due to lack of money, which was filmed in the summer of 1995 by the then band manager Emanuel Fialik as a director, you can see first a dog and then the flower of the single cover. The band members appear with a bare, oiled torso in front of a white background. In an official making-of for the video that was produced later, guitarist Richard Kruspe reported that Fialik was inspired by the very reduced presentation of the video for the song Nothing Compares 2 U by the Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor .

The second video from 1998, staged very opulently in return, shows the band members as a white wolf with six faces, who - attracted by their scent - follows a young woman (played by Maja Müller) to a castle, seduces her there and thereby transformed into his own kind. It was recorded between April 20 and 25, 1998 with director Philipp Stölzl in Potsdam-Babelsberg and in the ballroom and staircase of Schönhausen Palace in Berlin-Pankow .
