The Inchtabokatables (also for short in fan circles: Inchies or Inchties ) was a Berlin band that existed from 1991 to 2002. Stylistically, the band has changed again and again and can therefore be classified in categories such as folk , speed folk , punk rock or medieval rock .

Band history

The Inchtabokatables were founded on February 7, 1991 in the Berliner Bärenschenke . According to Robert Beckmann , the name comes from Bruno Adams . The special thing about the band from the start was the line-up, which consisted of two violins, cello, bass and drums, true to the principle of no guitars .

The original band members (pseudonyms in parentheses) are: Robert Beckmann ( B. Breuler ), Tobias Unterberg ( eg interpretation ), Jan Klemm ( Mr. Jeh ), Franziska Schubert ( Frenzi underdrive ) and Titus Jany ( Kokolorus Not at all , Dr. tinnitus Banani ). Klemm and Unterberg previously played with Eric Fish (the current front man of Subway to Sally ) in the band Catriona . Beckmann and Jany traveled through the country to medieval markets during the GDR era .

The debut album Inchtomanie was released in 1992 and set accents in the field of folk rock . The album also contains the title Tomato Fish , which should become the most famous piece of the band. Shortly afterwards Schubert left the band and was replaced by Oliver Riedel ( Orgien-Olli ) on bass.

While the next two albums ( White Sheep 1993, Ultra 1994) can still be classified in the area of medieval rock and folk rock , the musical profile of the band changed after a short interlude in 1995 with titles such as Time out and received significant influences from New German Hardness and Industrial Rock ( Quiet 1997, Too Loud 1998). The reason for this may have been the previous bassist change: Moeh , who was previously a member of the industrial rock band TASS , joined Riedel, who was now looking for his luck at Rammstein .

1998 Inchtabokatables participated in the project Götterdämmerung part where the fan club of the Berlin punk band The doctors to calling with just these other bands to record a tribute sampler and publish. The Inchtabokatables contributed their version of Meine Ex (plodified girlfriend) to this project by satirizing the lyrics as a news broadcast and only leaving the chorus as in the original. The text was underlaid with rhythmic Motown jazz .

The use of cellos and other string instruments is typical - sometimes in very unusual uses

After separating from their old label , which still released the best-of album Nine Inch Years , which the band did not agree with, they had time for completely new ideas. The sixth and last studio album, Mitten im Krieg , released in 2001, can not be compared with any of the previous albums.

In the same year the band supported Pat MacDonald on his album Degrees of Gone, produced by John Parish .

An eleven year break

In 2002 it was announced that after having been on stage for eleven years, they deserved an equally long break. The farewell concert took place on September 28, 2002 in the Columbiahalle in Berlin . In addition, the double album Ultimate Live was released in the same year . A band biography called We Were Young and Needed the Money. The Inchtabokatables 1991-2001 by the authors Harald Hauswald and Maria Jany should be published by Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf in 2002, was announced several times, but was not published due to the dissolution of the band.

The former band members are now devoting themselves to other projects. Beckmann worked for some time as a booker in Lindenpark in Potsdam , Jany was the drummer (as Brother Liebe ) of the medieval rock band Potentia Animi and Moeh was the bass player of the Motomatic band . Beckmann and Unterberg make radio play music together as Der Deutung and the Ro , Klemm and Unterberg toured with Mila Mar and Unterberg with Deine Lakaien , Subway to Sally , Last Instance and Eric Fish's solo program. The latter also plays on CDs by New Model Army and Angelzoom, among others . Beckmann sings on the live CD / DVD Raue Spree of the medieval band In Extremo . Unterberg can be seen on the Subway-to-Sally DVD “Nackt”, because he accompanied the acoustic tour on the cello for months, and has recorded two titles on both of Silbermond's previous releases . Beckmann and Jany have been playing together in the band Grüßaugust since 2010 .

The “break” has now been extended for a further eleven years.
