Deine Lakaien is a music project from Germany that has been active since 1985 . It consists of the singer Alexander Veljanov and the composer and multi-instrumentalist Ernst Horn . The group combines influences of the dark wave with pop and characteristics of the avant-garde .

Band history

Foundation (1985–1989)

Deine Lakaien was founded in 1985 by Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov. At that time, Ernst Horn was Kapellmeister at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe , theater pianist and composer at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich, he mainly dealt with avant-garde music of the 20th century . The native Macedonian Alexander Veljanov studied theater and film studies in Munich in 1985 , he belonged to the Gothic scene and was primarily interested in Dark Wave . Alexander Veljanov said about getting to know Ernst Horn, who is around sixteen years his senior:

“There were two men facing each other who were quite different and the age difference could not be overlooked. When we started talking about music, the ice was quickly broken, although our musical tastes couldn't have been more different. "

- Alexander Veljanov : Tagesspiegel in January 2007

Ernst Horn was not satisfied with his previous job, he wanted to do something more modern. In the winter of 1984 he had already recorded a few pieces for a new project, all he was missing was a singer. In 1985 he placed a newspaper advertisement with the text "Search for singers who are willing to experiment". After Alexander Veljanov contacted Ernst Horn in response to the complaint, they met in Munich and founded your Lakaien that same year.

In May 1986, the debut album Deine Lakaien was released with an edition of 500 records , which Ernst Horn financed himself and sold from his apartment in Lochham . Although the musicians were looking for record stores all over Germany that would sell the album, they found only a few interested parties. Thanks to a few shops, some 100 records were finally sold, and the track Color-Ize was played more often in regional discos and developed into an underground hit there. The success of Deine Lakaien remained very limited locally. In 1990 Color-Ize was also released on the first Zillo sampler German Mystic Sound Sampler Volume I , at which point, however, Deine Lakaien already had a record deal.

Despite the uncertain future, they recorded a demo cassette in 1987, which - based on the silver packaging - was called Silver Tape and Silver Cassette . With an edition of around 50 pieces of the silver tape , your lackeys tried for years to arouse the interest of a record label. In 1989 a fan of Deine Lakaien approached Carl Erling, Gymnastic Records Munich. In 1990, Deine Lakaien signed a contract with him, and the newly founded sub-label ClassX took over your Lakaien. For the next album only the songs Days gone by , Reincarnation and Love Me to the End from Silver Tape were used, the rest of the promo was discarded at the band's request, although ClassX would have released Silver Tape unchanged. It was not until 2003 that the silver tape was re-released under the name 1987 .

Path to Success (1990–1995)

Ernst Horn, Alexander Veljanov (acoustic performance), July 15, 2006 in Hanover , Gilde Parkbühne ( Secret Garden Festival )

As the first European band to sign a record deal with Gymnastic Records, the uncertain time for Deine Lakaien was over: In January 1991, the second album Dark Star was released , which sold over 5000 times in the course of a few months. A little later in November 1991, the EP 2nd Star was released with further tracks and remixes and at the end of 1991 the debut album was re-released on CD. Also at the end of 1991 the first Deine-Lakaien-Tour took place, on which the band played in front of up to 800 visitors in Bochum . Since Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov wanted to play concerts without playback and tape tracks, the violinist Christian "Komo" Komorowski and the multi-instrumentalist and medieval musician Michael Popp joined the live cast. Christian Komorowski was known to Alexander Veljanov from Berlin from the band Love Sister Hope , Michael Popp and Ernst Horn met at the Munich Residenztheater . Ernst Horn also founded the band Qntal in 1991 with Michael Popp . Because of the success of the Dark Star Tour , it was continued in 1992 and even released a first live album, Dark Star Tour '92 , with recordings of the concerts on February 19, 1992 in Detmold, Hunky Dory, on February 21, 1992 in Hamburg , Markthalle and on February 25, 1992 in Munich, Station West.

On October 11, 1991, Deine Lakaien gave a concert at Vier-Linden in Hildesheim, which was recorded for the radio show Grenzwellen , followed by another on February 19, 1992 at Hunky Dory in Detmold. After this successful collaboration, Ecki Stieg , the moderator of Grenzwellen, suggested an appearance at an “own event”. Ernst Horn started from a private party and developed a concept to perform some Deine-Lakaien pieces for two with a prepared grand piano . The event turned out to be a festival with several bands in one hall. Despite the significantly larger frame, the performance was well received by the audience, so that Deine Lakaien played a first acoustic tour with Stephen Brown and Blaine L. Reininger from Tuxedomoon in December 1992 with the Dark Moon Tour .

In 1993, Deine Lakaien played a few more acoustic concerts, but the musicians mainly occupied themselves with the recordings for their third album. Veljanov also released the album "Suck Success" in March 1993 with his side project Run Run Vanguard . On October 29, 1993, Forest Enter Exit was released , the first album with which Deine Lakaien reached a chart position. The first Forest-Enter-Exit-Tour took place in November and December 1993 and was continued in 1994. The concert in the Festhalle Durlach in Karlsruhe on December 10, 1993 was recorded and released on VHS in 1995. 1994 saw the release of the first single, Mindmachine . In 1995 the second large-scale acoustic tour took place with the instrumental group Das Holz as opening act, for which the live CD Acoustic was released. In addition, the second Qntal album was released with Qntal II . Alexander Veljanov worked with the English band Sleeping Dogs Wake , which came into contact with Deine Lakaien as the opening act on the Forest Enter Exit tour in 1993 .

The second decade (1996-2005)

Ernst Horn with prepared piano (acoustic performance), April 29, 2006, Berlin, Neue Nationalgalerie / Salon Noir

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the band's founding, the video cassette First Decade with live recordings and video clips was released in 1996 , and the album Winter Fish Testosterone was released . The Winter Fish Testosterone Tour took place in March, April, October and November , with Qntal as the opening act: the musicians stayed on stage for the entire concert, only Sigrid Hausen , the singer from Qntal, went during Un vers de dreyt never left the stage and was replaced by Alexander Veljanov, who sang My Winter in the smooth transition . In the fall of 1996, ClassX was dissolved and replaced by Chrom Records . In 1997, Deine Lakaien largely paused in favor of various solo activities.

In 1998 the album Kasmodiah was recorded. During these recordings Christian Komorowski and Michael Popp were also represented in the studio for the first time, at the same time they were added to the official band and were represented in the videos for Return and Into My Arms . In 2000, however, the two Deine Lakaien already left, at the same time Ernst Horn separated from Qntal and founded Helium Vola . Before the separation, however, the album and the singles Return and Into My Arms were released in 1999 , and Deine Lakaien went on tour with Summit . For the sale of Kasmodiah , Deine Lakaien worked for the first time with the major label Columbia Records in addition to Chrom Records .

After further secondary and solo activities, the first two acoustic concerts for six years took place in December 2001. Shortly before, the recordings for the next album were completed, in January 2002 White Lies was released . The single Generators was released in October 2001 , and Where you are was released in two versions in November 2002 . For the tour in March and November 2002, the live musicians Tobias “B. Interpretation “Unterberg from The Inchtabokatables , Robert Wilcocks from Sleeping Dogs Wake and Summit as well as Yvonne“ Ivee Leon ”Fechner and“ Sharifa ”on Deine Lakaien. The concert in Lindenpark in Potsdam on November 29, 2002 was recorded and was released on DVD in 2003.

Since there was no official publication of the Silver Tape , only a few bad bootlegs were in circulation. After Ernst Horn heard a bootleg in which someone mixed their own pieces between the actual tracks, the two decided to release the album under the title in 1987 after 16 years . In 2005 the studio album April Skies was released . The April Skies Tour took place in April 2005 . In the video for the single Cool Vibes from 2005, the Estonian girl group Vanilla Ninja used images from the video for the Deine Lakaien single Mindmachine from 1994.

Present (since 2005)

In the following years, Deine Lakaien celebrated the band's 20th anniversary with some special events. The concert That never Happened Before kicked off on August 12, 2005 in the Capitol in Hanover . For the first time in the history of Deine Lakaien, Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov performed together with electronics. Only pieces from the first decade were played. In 2006 the recording of the concert appeared on the DVD The Concert That Never Happened Before in a limited number of copies in 1987. In 2005 Dark Star with 2nd Star and Forest Enter Exit with Mindmachine were re-released in double CD editions. Only a few concerts took place in 2006, including an acoustic performance in the Neue Nationalgalerie as part of the Melancholie exhibition . Genius and madness in art and two appearances each in Russia and Spain. In the summer of 2006, A Fish Called Prince, a new track by Deine Lakaien, was released on the sampler Where's Neil When You Need Him? . The sampler is supposed to represent a tribute to Neil Gaiman , the occasion was the filming of the Neil Gaiman novella Stardust under the name The Star Wanderer .

Indicator tour in Plant II in Leipzig

The 20 Years of Electronic Avantgarde tour in February 2007 was supposed to be the highlight of the anniversary celebrations . Together with the Orchestra Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt , Deine Lakaien performed in concert halls such as the Gasteig ( Philharmonie Munich ) and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main . The recordings from February 18, 2007 from the König-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen were released on June 8, 2007 in different versions with up to three DVDs and two CDs. In the summer and autumn of 2007 there were further concerts with orchestra, in October 2007, Deine Lakaien played one concert each in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and two concerts in Austria, with Lola Angst among others . In 2008 Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov want to take a break to have time for their solo projects and will only give one concert at the Amphi Festival in Cologne on July 19, as well as an acoustic concert in Beijing. In June 2009, two more concerts followed in China with a band.

In December 2009 and January 2010, as well as in May 2012, Deine Lakaien went on an acoustic tour in Germany again like in 1995. On September 3, 2010, the single Gone was released . In addition to the actual song, it contains a remix of the same as well as the songs Kraken and A Fish called Prince . Two weeks later the album Indicator was released in a normal and a limited edition. After the Indicator tour in October 2010, Robert Wilcocks left the live band at his own request.

After the acoustic tours, Deine Lakaien recorded their tenth studio album, Crystal Palace , which was released in August 2014. In addition to the songs Farwell and Where the winds don't blow , which were also represented on the album, the single released also contained the track Into Chaos . The album was produced electronically without guest musicians and thus represents a return to the beginnings of the group. For the subsequent concerts, the live line-up was changed with Slobodan Kajkut on drums and Goran Trajkoski on electric guitar and electronics. Both musicians had accompanied Alexander Veljanov on the 2009 tour to his solo album Porta Macedonia .

The band celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2016 with a kind of "best of" album "XXX. The 30 Years Retrospective", which in the 4CD version also contained studio and live material that had not been released until then. In the following two years, Deine Lakaien played several "XXX - The 30 Years-Tour" concerts in special concert halls and the like. a. the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cologne Philharmonic and the Dresden Kulturpalast. On this tour, Horn and Veljanov were not only accompanied by all current live musicians, i.e. besides Kajkut and Traijkoski also B. Deutung, Ivee Leon and Katharina Garrard, but also presented their solo projects Helium Vola and Veljanov . A live recording of the tour was published, which also contained selected film recordings of the concert in the Laeiszhalle.

Band name

The name "Deine Lakaien" was suggested by Alexander Veljanov. It is based on the line of text “Even lackeys have tact” in the Einstürzende Neubauten song The exact time . The reason for this selection was that your Lakaien was supposed to make electronic music, but the two musicians saw the wave movement as dead. So they wanted a name that was not associated with this trend. At the same time, the name should be German, although it was already clear at the time that the texts would be predominantly in English.

music

In terms of style, your lackeys are primarily assigned to the dark wave environment. The studio albums are mainly produced electronically, only on Kasmodiah from 1999 and April Skies from 2005 the respective live musicians took part in the recordings, for White Lies from 2002 a violinist, a cellist, a guitarist and a hurdy-gurdy player participated. Influences include serious music and various artists from the 1970s and 1980s such as Ultravox , Kraftwerk , Virgin Prunes , Bauhaus and Joy Division .

An essential feature of Deine Lakaien's music is the great variety of styles. So gather alone in the 1993 album Forest Enter Exit with The Walk to the Moon a quiet, emotional, mostly accompanied with the piano ballad with Nightmare a mixture solemn passages and dissonant avant Parts and techno songs like Resurrection Machine and Brain Fic . Later albums are a bit more uniform in character; Kasmodiah and White Lies are relatively calm, while the April Skies album is a lot livelier. This character is supported by the use of an electric guitar and influences from rock music .

Texts

Both musicians from Deine Lakaien write half of the lyrics. While Ernst Horn was responsible for the lyrics in the past, Alexander Veljanov wrote most of the text on Winter Fish Testosterone . On the last two albums, Ernst Horn's share has risen again a little. In an interview, Ernst Horn said:

"I have essentially two topics: the very depressive all-for-free topic and on the other hand the philosophical, political."

- Ernst Horn

1991 Dark Star is a concept album about love, while 1987 Silver Tape deals with death. The debut album from 1986 is about a person who moves from the country to a city and fails there. Later albums no longer have a consistent concept. The lyrics are generally characterized by self-irony and black humor.

Most of the songs by Deine Lakaien have lyrics in English. Only a few exceptions have German ( Lass Mich , album: Kasmodiah ; Bei Nacht , single: One Night ) or French ( Vivre , album: April Skies ; Europe , album: Indicator ) texts. Despite the German title, the lyrics of Frühlingstraum (album: Dark Star ) and Wunderbar (album: White Lies ) are also in English (the word “wonderful” is also used in the chorus of the song of the same name). German text fragments can also be found in the song The Old Man Is Dead from the album Indicator .

Concerts

Alexander Veljanov, Ernst Horn, B. Deutung, Robert Wilcocks with the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt, Arena Berlin , February 19, 2007

In the course of their careers, Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov have developed various approaches to present their music live. In the background there was always the idea of not wanting to appear as a typical “synth duo” with keyboard , DAT and vocals. The first concept to present the music of Deine Lakaien consisted of Ernst Horn with electronics and later piano , Christian "Komo" Komorowski with violin and Michael Popp with electric guitar and various medieval instruments. From 1991 to 2001 most of the Deine-Lakaien concerts took place in this line-up, concerts are recorded on the CD Dark Star Tour '92 and the video cassettes First Decade and Forest Enter Exit . After Ernst Horn and Alexander Veljanov separated from their live musicians in 2001, they found the cellist Tobias “B. Deutung ”Unterberg, guitarist Robert Wilcocks and violinists and singers Yvonne“ Ivee Leon ”Fechner and“ Sharifa ”a new live line-up in 2002.

The first “Acoustic” concert took place in mid-1992, at which Alexander Veljanov was only accompanied by Ernst Horn, who played a grand piano prepared according to John Cage's example . Extensive “Acoustic” tours took place in 1992 and 1995, and the live CD Acoustic was recorded on the latter . The band still plays “acoustic” concerts sporadically today. In 2005, the Concert That Never Happened Before took place, the only Deine-Lakaien concert in which Alexander Veljanov was exclusively accompanied by Ernst Horn's electronics. The concert was published on the DVD of the same name.

In 2007 the first Deine Lakaien tour with an orchestra took place. Together with the normal live line-up, the 40 musicians of the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt played in various concert halls and halls in Germany. It was particularly important for the band to differentiate themselves from bands like Metallica , who only had their pieces rearranged for the S&M concerts:

"Dumb down your songs and pour some sticky classic syrup over it, that's really bad."

- Alexander Veljanov

Since Ernst Horn had already worked as an arranger 20 years earlier , he was able to rewrite his pieces for orchestra himself. The orchestra was not fully involved in every piece, there were even purely electronic pieces. Ernst Horn sees his orchestral parts mainly inspired by modern classical music from the time after the Second World War, they include unusual ways of playing such as striking the instruments or playing col legno . Ernst Horn was mainly involved as a conductor, but also played the grand piano and keyboard.

The band sees these various live lineups as an important means of performing the theme of a song:

"It is not just a matter of leaving out a violin, but actually re-interpretations that reinterpret the character of a song over and over again."

- Alexander Veljanov
