life and work

Ernst Horn with prepared piano (acoustic performance), April 29, 2006, Berlin, Neue Nationalgalerie / Salon Noir

Ernst Horn studied conducting , piano and drums at the music academies in Munich , Freiburg im Breisgau and Hamburg and worked as a conductor at the state theaters in Karlsruhe and Oldenburg and as a theater pianist and composer at the Bavarian State Theater in Munich. In 1985 he gave up his conducting career in order to gain a foothold beyond the opera business as a composer and specialist in electronic music. With Alexander Veljanov he founded your Lakaien in the same year . The band is his best-known project so far and is well known and widely recognized beyond the German borders. In addition to his main job as a musician and composer of electronic music, Ernst Horn also works as a theater musician and composer for radio plays.

With his electronic, always structured compositions, Horn has created an idiosyncratic style that clearly stands out from the mainstream. He won the Keyboard Magazine Reader Tape Contest in 1988 with his first solo release, the piece Einzelhaft . Electronic elements are usually found in Horn in combination with other compositional styles and / or samples . One example of this is the radio play Greed Freedom , in which the medieval hymn style is combined with speech samples. This piece also shows Horn's interest in taking up political and social issues. Another element used here is the embedding of children's voices. This stylistic device can be found again and again at Horn, such as B. on the Helium Vola album Liod , or in the track Acht , which shows the humorous side of this artist.

In commissioned compositions for the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt ( Spiegelarien , 2009) and as part of the Leipzig Bach Festival ("BACH - Alternative Compositions on Historical Basics", 2012) Horn combines works by old masters such as GF Handel and JS Bach with his own compositions whose roots are in the New music are founded.

Together with Ecki Stieg, he embarked on an extensive reading tour in 2007 and impressed as a keenly observing essayist.

Ernst Horn continues the Chrom Records label, which was closed in 2007, as a brand and artist label, especially for his projects Helium Vola and Deine Lakaien.

Ernst Horn lives and works in Munich- Sendling .
