Qntal (pronounced "Kan-tall") is a German music project that combines music of the Middle Ages with electro influences.

history

Qntal was founded in 1991 by the Deine Lakaien musician Ernst Horn together with Michael Popp . Popp played with Deine Lakaien as a live musician and founded Estampie . Qntal was supposed to combine avant-garde electronics with floating female singing and medieval instruments. The Estampie musician Sigrid "Syrah" Hausen joined the band as a singer .

In 1992 the first album Qntal I was released by the Chrom Records label , which also owned your Lakaien and Estampie at the time. Due to the very good response from the press and fans, the three continued the project and published Qntal II in 1995 . Afterwards Qntal played a tour as the opening act for Deine Lakaien.

In 1999 Ernst Horn left Qntal. His way of working alone in the studio allowed only limited influence from the other members, which led to discrepancies. Later he founded the Helium Vola project in order to be able to implement his musical views more radically. Michael Popp sees this turning point for Qntal as the transition from project to band.

With Philipp Groth as keyboard player , Michael Popp and Sigrid Hausen continued their work and in February 2003 released Qntal III - Tristan und Isolde . In addition, the first singles in the band's history were released with O, Tristan and Nihil . Later in the same year Qntal recorded a live DVD at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig. In 2005 Qntal IV - Ozymandias and the single Cupido appeared , a year later Qntal V - Silver Swan and the single Von den Elben .

In 2007, Qntal performed at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen together with Estampie in the Schauspielhaus in Leipzig. On February 29, 2008 the album Qntal VI - Translucida was released.

During a longer creative break, Philipp Groth left the band and Leon Rodt took over the role of producer. On November 21st, 2014 Qntal released their seventh studio album Qntal VII .

The eighth studio album, Qntal VIII - Nachtblume , was released on March 9, 2018 . In addition to the well-known medieval poetry, texts by the German romantic Joseph von Eichendorff and the German fantasy and science fiction author Markus Heitz were set to music.

style

Qntal combines medieval poetry with modern electronic sounds. Qntal synthesizer sounds combine with samples and original recordings of historical instruments such as lutes and shawms . Sigrid "Syrah" Hausen's classical singing moves in the mezzo-soprano . The drums are made up of samples or synthesizers. The majority of the tempos are slow, and the character of many songs is balladic.

The repertoire consists of medieval texts in Old and Middle High German , Latin , English , Provencal and Old French . Qntal values historically correct pronunciation and intonation.

Surname

The name Qntal is the singer Syrah after a fantasy word that appeared to her in a dream.
