Beginnings

Built in 1900 as a laundry, the building has undergone various conversions. It was used as an excursion destination for people from Potsdam, but later also as a film studio, studio and premiere cinema for the UFA . After the Second World War, the house was briefly under Soviet command until it underwent its last restructuring as a “dance and entertainment center” in the 1960s. Dance teas, singing competitions, theater performances as well as children's and concert events were an integral part of the Lindenpark and were characterized by the socialist event culture. Under new leadership, a new direction was taken in the 1980s, also due to the changed social and political climate. The Lindenpark now offered a platform for the newly developing punk scene and young bands. The facility became known not only in the local cultural scene, but also beyond the city limits. In addition, cultural sporting events took place in the L. Among other things, the very successful format on GDR television: “ Join in, do it, do it better ”.

The turn

The newly gained freedoms made it possible from late autumn 1989 that bands from West Berlin could also perform in Lindenpark. The concert of the Skaformation Blechreiz achieved particular fame . Since 1989, the characteristic bus has been in the middle of the hall, which has since become a trademark.

In 1990 the Lindenpark eV was founded. With five institutions, the association was one of the largest socio-cultural centers in the state of Brandenburg in the following years. The eV comprised the Lindenpark, the open youth house jwd with the mini studio, the star workshop and the Spartacus with the youth club S13. The main idea behind the foundation was the promotion of art and culture, youth and child aid and the support of people in need.

At the beginning of 2000 the structural and financial problems of the Lindenpark eV increased, which in 2008 led to the bankruptcy of the association. In March of the following year, the Lindenpark was taken over by the "Walter May" Foundation for Social Education (SPI).

Facilities

In addition to the event building, the Lindenpark area houses the youth center “jwd”, an open-air stage, the largest skate park in Potsdam and the surrounding area, as well as several playgrounds and two yurts .
