S&M (short for Symphony and Metallica ) is the second live album by the US heavy metal band Metallica , which was recorded live in April 1999 at two concerts with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley (California) . The album was later released as a video on DVD and VHS under the direction of Wayne Isham .

The name is a play on words short for sadomasochism , but in this context it means Symphony and Metallica . The S on the album cover is formed from a treble clef written backwards, while the M comes from the classic Metallica logo.

Emergence

The idea of having a metal band work with a classical orchestra came from the composer Michael Kamen , who also wrote the orchestral parts for it and took part in the performances as a conductor. With his first band, the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble founded in 1967, the classically trained Kamen gained experience in combining rock music and classical music. a. with David Bowie , Eric Clapton , Pink Floyd and Queen a reputation over the years as a specialist in such projects. Since he also worked with Queensrÿche , who was also represented by Metallica's management Q-Prime , Q-Prime recommended Kamen when an arranger for the orchestral parts was sought for the studio recording of Nothing Else Matters (from the black album ).

Music genre

On S&M , Metallica plays their own pieces as usual (two of them, Minus Human and No Leaf Clover , were published here for the first time), while the symphony orchestra spreads out around them, mixes in or plays against them frontally. The best results, as confirmed by James Hetfield in an interview, were achieved with pieces that did not sound too massive and complex, leaving enough space for the orchestral additions.

reception

The time of publication was sometimes seen as commercially motivated. For some Metallica fans, S&M marked the final arrival of Metallica in the mainstream . Others saw the album with its combination of rock and orchestral elements as a success.

Laut.de criticized the commercially motivated release timing, "that Metallica did not necessarily pay attention when selecting songs that the songs on the album come across best in an orchestral environment." But it was "amazing how everything is arranged that way." that nothing sounds artificial. "
