Wherever I May Roam ( English for: " Wherever I may roam ") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . It was founded in 1992 as a single from her as Black Album known self-titled album released. It reached the charts in many countries, for example in Great Britain at number 25. It reached number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100. The piece also gave its name to the following tour for the album, the Wherever-We-May-Roam tour.
Music genre
The piece has an unusual instrumentation in which Asian instruments such as gong and sitar were used. Also played Jason Newsted during the intro to accentuate a twelve string electric bass from Warwick as it appears on the DVD Classic Albums: Metallica - Metallica said. An ordinary four-string bass is used for the rest of the piece. The string instruments are in normal tuning (EADGHE).

Wherever I May Roam is about life on tour. Drummer Lars Ulrich said:
“... I think that the origin of the title comes from the times when we toured Europe in the same bus with the roadies , the other bands that were on the program and other people who made it between to join the gigs ... "
He had to ignore what was happening around him to get by on the tour. He was referring to groupies , parties, drugs and the like.
Live performance
The piece is played regularly at Metallica concerts. The S&M DVD features a version with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen .
Re-use
- The piece is featured in the Guitar Hero : Metallica video game .
- In the video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos , a bandit unit quotes the song: “Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, call me what you will”, and the Beastmaster hero says: “Where I lay my head is home. See that rock? That's my pillow. ”The first part of the last mentioned saying also comes from the song.
- An instrumental version can be found on the album Hands Without Shadows by guitarist Michael Angelo Batio .
- Sinner covered the song on A Tribute to the Four Horsemen .
- Apocalyptica played the song on Plays Metallica by Four Cellos .
- The track was sampled by Chase & Status for the dubstep single Saxon .
- The piece is also used as the goal anthem for the Toronto Maple Leafs .
