St. Anger (English for: " Holy Zorn ") is the eighth studio album by the US heavy metal band Metallica . It was initially due to appear on June 10, 2003, but was released on June 5 because of some songs that were previously circulating on the Internet.

Emergence

St. Anger was produced by Bob Rock and recorded at Headquarters Studio in San Rafael, California .

The album was born out of a feeling of inner turmoil within the band structure. Bassist Jason Newsted recently left the band to pursue his side project Echobrain . He clashed in advance with James Hetfield , who disliked the engagement in Newsted's second band. The psychotherapist Phil Towle was hired specifically to settle the disputes between the band members in order to preserve the unity of the band. At the same time, Hetfield entered into therapeutic treatment to regain control of his alcohol abuse. Work on the album could only begin in spring 2002. The film Some Kind of Monster , released in 2004, has among others. a. the therapy sessions on the subject.

Since the band had no permanent bass player at the time of recording, the bass tracks were temporarily recorded by producer Bob Rock. Robert Trujillo was chosen as the successor to the former bass player Jason Newsted at the beginning of 2003 , who is already listed as a band member in the CD booklet, but cannot be heard on St. Anger , but only on the additional DVD with live recordings that came with the digipak various studio sessions that play the songs of the entire album together.

For the first time in Metallica's career, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich also contributed to the album's lyrics. Bob Rock also influenced the songs.

Music genre

The album represents a clear departure from the music of the previous albums Load and ReLoad . The music style of the songs on the album is heavier and simpler than that of the two previous albums and also differs from the old, melodic Thrash Metal direction that the music of the Band in the 1980s. The sound is raw and produced less elaborately, which is reinforced by the unusually deep guitar tuning (Drop-C) for Metallica.

It is also noticeable that no guitar solos can be heard, which were an integral part of Metallica songs in the past. Kirk Hammett justified this with the fact that no band member should appear particularly prominent on the album; some solos that had been rehearsed on a trial basis also turned out to be unsuitable, so that in the end they completely renounced them. The songs are long, but characterized by many breaks and tempo changes. Furthermore, verses are often not used or hardly varied, for example in the title track.

Many critics criticized the drum sound, attributed to the snare drum , which produces an extremely popping, tinny sound due to its untensioned snare strings, a special tuning and a special way of playing .

“It was intended to sound raw. It sounds very powerful to me. We just wanted to keep it as honest and pure as possible, because that's just how we sound without all the big production techniques. "

- Kirk Hammett in an interview on laut.de.

“We wanted to make it sound like a band getting together in the garage for the first time. Only that the band is called Metallica. "

- Interview with Bob Rock on the Some Kind of Monster DVD
