Fuel ( English for: " gasoline ") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . The song was released as the third single from the seventh studio album ReLoad and in 1999 was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Hard Rock Performance .

Origin and content

Fuel was written by Kirk Hammett , James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich . As early as 1995, the band made a demo recording of the song under the title Fuel for Fire , with the text differing from the published song. A version with the original lyrics can be heard on the Cunning Stunts DVD . The song Fuel is about the fact that many people have the desire to drive their cars too fast or to live their lives too fast.

Live performances

The song was first played on February 9, 1997 in Chicago . Fuel is one of the songs that are regularly played at concerts, although the song with 418 performances (as of August 2012) is not one of the most played songs by the band. When singer James Hetfield could not perform due to an injury in July 2000, bassist Jason Newsted took over the vocals. At these appearances, Kid Rock worked on the turntables as a guest musician.
