Sad but True ( English for: " Sad but true ") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . The song was released in the spring of 1993 as the fifth and final single from their fifth studio album Metallica .

Emergence

Sad but True was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich . On September 13, 1990 the band recorded a demo version of the song, which differs from the final version in that it is much faster. Singer James Hetfield found the original version "too friendly" and was bothered by the hectic singing. Nevertheless, producer Bob Rock was enthusiastic about the song and said that the song could be the Kashmir of the 1990s. Rock was referring to a song by the Led Zeppelin band .

The musicians and rock decided to slow down the pace, which gave the song more impact. Band manager Cliff Burnstein stated that "you can pull teeth with this song ". Aside from the cover versions , it was only the second time in their career that Metallica tuned the guitars one tone lower. The first time the band did this on The Thing that Should Not Be . Before the guitar solo , the music stops for six beats . James Hetfield explained that the band had learned not to fill every break with music or guitars. During the chorus , Hetfield also played a slide guitar , which Kirk Hammett initially disliked.

James Hetfield got the inspiration for the song from the movie Magic - A Weird Love Story from 1978. Lars Ulrich explained in an interview that the song is about how different personalities in the psyche of a person do different things to those affected to let. It also explores how these things come into conflict and struggle to take control of the person.

Live performances

Sad but True is one of nine songs that Metallica has played at more than 1,000 concerts. The others are Master of Puppets , Creeping Death , One , Seek & Destroy , For Whom The Bell Tolls , Enter Sandman , Fade To Black, and Nothing Else Matters . In July 2000, Kid Rock took over the vocals at three concerts, as James Hetfield could not perform due to an injury. In June 2004, Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison stepped in for Lars Ulrich after he had to be hospitalized for a medical emergency. At some concerts in the fall of 2004, James Hetfield sang the song with Godsmack singer Sully Erna .
