Lulu is a collaboration album between the US singer-songwriter Lou Reed and the US metal band Metallica . It was released on October 31, 2011.

Emergence

The album is based on the under the title “ Lulu. Tragedy in 5 Acts with a Prologue ”summarized dramas Erdgeist (1895) and Die Büchse der Pandora (1904) by the German author Frank Wedekind . Lou Reed originally wrote the rough versions of the music for Robert Wilson's staging of the drama at the Berliner Ensemble .

The joint recordings for the album were recorded from April to June 2011 at Metallica's Studio HQ in San Rafael , California . The lyrics are entirely from Reed. Based on Reed's demos, the music was developed and arranged together in improvisations. In addition to Reed's spoken chants and the instrumentation by Metallica, string instruments form another defining element of many titles. Occasionally James Hetfield does the backing vocals. The full album has been available as a stream since October 2011.

Cover design

A wax doll is shown on the cover (Photo: Stan Musilek, Design: David Turner), which served as a mannequin around 1900 and is one of the exhibits at the Werkbundarchiv - Museum der Dinge in Berlin. The musician and production photos are from Anton Corbijn and Jeff Yeager.

criticism

Lulu was heavily criticized at times. So awarded Pitchfork Media only one out of ten stars. At Metacritic , the album received an overall rating of 44 out of 100, based on 29 English-language reviews. However, the British BBC rated the album more positively. It is not easy fare, but it could, in time, find the praise it deserves.
