Harvester of Sorrow ( English for "Harvest of Sorrows") is a song by the US metal band Metallica . It was released in the UK as the second single from their fourth studio album … And Justice for All , while Eye of the Beholder was released as the second single in North America .

background

Harvester of Sorrow was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich . The song is kept at a slow pace for the band at the time. Towards the end of the song she plays it in a counter tactical way. The lyrics are about a man who leads a normal life and has a wife and three children. One day the man goes crazy and kills everyone around him.

As the B-side , the band recorded cover versions of the songs Breadfan and The Prince , which were originally written by the Welsh heavy metal band Budgie and the English heavy metal band Diamond Head .

Live performances

The song was first played on May 23, 1988 at a concert in Los Angeles . Harvester of Sorrow is one of the band's regularly played songs and has been performed over 600 times. Only between 1995 and 2003 was the song not played. A live version of the song was used as the B-side for the single Nothing Else Matters . On this version, the band forgot to play the second chorus .
