Hardwired… to Self-Destruct received mostly positive reviews from critics. The side Metacritic calculated from 29 Reviews of English-language media is a section of 73%.

Sven Kabelitz from laut.de rated the album with four out of a possible five points. He sums it up as a “cross-section through their first six long players and the most diverse metal styles”. After the experiments on the previous albums, Metallica would go back to their roots. Especially the last song Spit Out the Bone is positively highlighted and described as "hard, intense, simply brilliant, without losing sight of the melody". Only Kirk Hammett is seen as "the biggest weak point" as he pulls some songs down with his guitar solos .
