German vinyl charts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German vinyl charts (currently Top 20 vinyl charts ) is a hit parade from the market research company GfK Entertainment that is currently published monthly. They are the official vinyl charts in Germany.

background

The German vinyl charts are determined by the German market research company GfK Entertainment on behalf of the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI). The hit list includes sales of all vinyl records from stationary specialist retailers , the music departments of electronics and drugstores and from mail order . These are " repertoire charts". They represent an excerpt from the regular German album charts , in which sales are recorded regardless of any repertoire segment. The vinyl charts are not only repertoire charts, but also “artist charts”, meaning samplers are not taken into account. A parallel placement of a product both in the album charts and in the vinyl charts is therefore not only possible in principle, but is the rule for products that sell well.

The vinyl charts were introduced as a top 20 hit parade in October 2015. With the introduction of this chart list, the chart investigators reacted to the up to now sustained upswing in records. Around 1.4 million vinyl albums were purchased in the first three quarters of 2015 alone. This means that sales rose by 25 percent compared to the same period in the previous year, or 3.1 percent of the total market. Dr. Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment, said: “The record is coming back - and that in times of music streaming , downloading and social media ! After an initial, successful test on Record Store Day in spring, we are pleased to now be able to determine the official German vinyl charts on a regular basis. ”According to GfK Entertainment, they cover 90 percent of German music sales. Great Britain had already introduced the vinyl charts in April this year, but with a weekly survey.

The upward trend of records in Germany continued in the following year, as many records were sold in the first nine months of 2016 as in 2015 as a whole. A total of 2.1 million vinyl albums were sold between January and September 2016, 50 percent more than in the same period last year. The increase in sales was correspondingly high: 47 million euros were generated by vinyl sales in the first three quarters, a growth of around 49 percent (4.3 percent of industry sales). The record continues the upward trend that began in 2007. By the end of the year, a total of 3.3 million vinyl records had been sold, which meant a share of sales of 4.6 percent of the overall market. In 2018, sales in Germany fell slightly for the first time. The vinyl releases achieved sales of 70 million euros this year, around four million euros or 5.2 percent less than in the previous year. A total of 3.1 million records were sold in 2018, which meant a sales share of 4.4 percent of the overall market.

Monthly chart evaluation

The following list contains all the top riders since the vinyl charts were introduced. With The Book of Souls , the British rock band Iron Maiden was the first to reach the top of this chart. As a rule, most albums have only managed to stay at the top of the chart for one month, only the two albums Blackstar ( David Bowie ) and Blue & Lonesome ( The Rolling Stones ) were at the top for two months in a row. The German rock band Die Toten Hosen were the first to make it to the top of the charts with a second album. Furthermore, AnnenMayKantereit , Böhse Onkelz , Rammstein and the Beatles have made it to the top of the charts with two albums.
