Biffy Clyro is a Scottish band from Ayrshire formed in 1995.
history
There are various rumors about the origin of the name. Simon Neil once stated that he had a ballpoint pen ("biro-pen") at school that had a picture of Cliff Richard . They jokingly called him the "Cliffy-Biro". By swapping the initial sounds, they came up with their band name. Another explanation is that the band name is an acronym for Big Imagination For Feeling Young 'Cos Life Yearns Real Optimism .
Following the albums Blackened Sky , The Vertigo of Bliss and Infinity Land , all produced by Chris Sheldon , her major debut Puzzle Garth oversaw 'GGGarth' Richardson , who had also produced Rage Against the Machine , Skunk Anansie and Chevelle . In April 2009, the trio went to Los Angeles to record their fifth album, Only Revolutions . In 2013, Biffy Clyro's sixth work, the double album Opposites , was released. Her album Ellipsis , released in July 2016, landed, like Opposites before , at number one on the British album charts. On February 21, 2020, the band released the single Instant History .
Biffy Clyro is close friends with the band Aereogramme , also from Glasgow . Simon Neil and aereogramme drummer Martin Scott have known each other since elementary school. Simon Neil started the rock project Marmaduke Duke with JP Reid from Sucioperro .
Since the festival tour in 2010, Biffy Clyro has been supported live by Mike Vennart (former singer and guitarist of Oceansize ) on the second guitar. Since the tour for the last album, Gambler (also a former guitarist of Oceansize) has been playing keyboard live.
style
On her first album Blackened Sky , Biffy Clyro played an alternative rock that was heavily influenced by bands like Far , and which was compared early on to American bands like Jimmy Eat World . Carsten Agthe from the progressive rock magazine Eclipsed chose the term “popcore” for the style and was reminded of Fugazi and Jimmy Eat World. With her second album The Vertigo of Bliss , she began a change in her style towards progressive rock. Agthe found it "more thoughtful and harmonious" than the debut. He recognized it as " emo , art , post and alternative rock full of stylistic twists, surprising breaks and polyphonic vocal harmonies". Every now and then it sounds punk, but also sometimes epic. For him, this resulted in "the perfect interface between Mogwai and Pearl Jam ". Since this album is rather difficult to access, it is as revered as it is controversial by many fans. Their third album, Infinity Land , continued the development in the direction of Prog-Rock, but now had more pop echoes again. It has been classified as emo rock by Agthe. He said that when you listen to it you don't necessarily know what's next, because “ Techno blubber ” is followed by an “orgiastic hard core attack”, alternative rock interspersed with reggae rhythms by “crazy breaks” and so on.
