Greatest Hits is the first compilation album by the British rock group Queen , released in late 1981, and their most commercially successful album.

The album

Greatest Hits contains the most successful singles from the band's first decade; from 1973 to 1980 nine of the total of 15 Queen studio albums were released.

The album begins with the band's two biggest single hits - Bohemian Rhapsody and Another One Bites the Dust - and ends, like the concerts, with We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions . More than on the studio albums, the pieces by Freddie Mercury dominate on Greatest Hits , as his compositions were disproportionately represented, especially in the first single releases of the individual albums. Only Roger Taylor does not contain a track: Until the publication of Greatest Hits , none of the songs he sang himself at the time had appeared as a queen single.

There are numerous different LP editions of this album , the title composition of which has been slightly adapted to the respective countries. The single Under Pressure (together with David Bowie ), released in parallel to Greatest Hits , is not included in the British album version.

With more than 31 million copies sold, Queens Greatest Hits is one of the world's best-selling albums. It took first place in the charts . a. in Great Britain , Germany , the Netherlands and Austria . With six million copies sold, it is the UK's best-selling album of all time. It reached 11 times platinum status and was on the UK charts for 753 weeks. Greatest Hits Queens is also the most commercially successful album in the USA . In 2011 the box set and the three individual albums from it were released as a digitally remastered version.

The photographs on the cover and on the inner sleeve are from Snowdon . As with the selection of the pieces, the individual versions also differ in the cover design, which is particularly true for the LP version of the album, which originally appeared in German-speaking countries.

After the two complementary compilations Greatest Hits II (1991) and Greatest Hits III (1999) were published, box sets with the first hits album were jointly produced : Greatest Hits I & II became 1994 and The Platinum Collection (Greatest Hits I, II & III) released in 2000. A video clip compilation Greatest Flix I and Greatest Flix II was released individually and in 1992 together with four pieces previously unpublished on video under the title Box of Flix - Queen's Greatest Hits as double VHS and in 1998 (without bonus tracks) under the title Greatest Flix I & II as a double video CD .

The included single mixes of Fat Bottomed Girls and Flash differ significantly from the versions released on the respective studio albums.

Spending in other countries

There are numerous different versions of the Greatest Hits LP, adapted to the respective countries. Below are examples of some of the deviations from the British edition. In the German-speaking countries, an additional, seventh track, Spread Your Wings (Deacon), and a further edition instead, a ninth track, Under Pressure (Queen / Bowie) are included. The only 14 tracks in the USA / Canada edition contains the singles Keep Yourself Alive (May) and Under Pressure , while for example some LP versions released in Bulgaria contain two songs with Death on Two Legs (Mercury) and Sweet Lady (May), who never appeared as singles.

In the wake of the success of the compilation album Classic Queen (the US equivalent of Greatest Hits II ) released in the United States in 1992 , Hollywood Records re-released the album Greatest Hits in the same year . The red cover is based on that of Classic Queen . In contrast to the conventional CD edition, this US reissue contains, instead of Bohemian Rhapsody (which is featured on Classic Queen ) and Flash, the two songs I Want to Break Free and Body Language , which was relatively successful as a single in the USA in contrast to Great Britain was.
