Queen Rock Montreal is the sixth live album by the British rock group Queen , released in 2007, and contains recordings from concerts on November 24th and 25th, 1981 in Montreal , Canada's second largest city. These appearances in front of 18,000 viewers each were recorded for the movie Queen - We Will Rock You , which premiered in 1983.

Queen's concerts at the Montreal Forum were - more than a month after the end of the Latin American tours - specially scheduled for the filming; before that the band had already performed three times in this hall. Queen Rock Montreal documents Queen's last two concerts with a four-person line-up - without an additional keyboard player as in the following appearances. For the first time the group played their recently released single Under Pressure , which was at the top of the UK charts at the time. The last time in the concert program were the tracks Let Me Entertain You and I'm in Love with My Car as well as Roger Taylor's timpani solo. In contrast to the DVD, the album Queen Rock Montreal contains the previously unreleased live recordings of the pieces Flash and The Hero from the Flash Gordon soundtrack , of which only the soundtracks, but no film recordings, are available. Queen's cover version of Jailhouse Rock is placed in a different place in all releases of the concerts than in the live performances, where the band played the song as part of the encore before We Will Rock You .

The Parlophone label released a shortened version of the title Keep Yourself Alive , 2:30 minutes long, as a download single .

Movie We Will Rock You

The director and producer Saul Swimmer recorded Queens concerts in Montreal in the anamorphic 35mm cinema film format, which, according to Brian May, is one of the band's only three concert recordings in "film" format. Already during the filming there was tension between the music group and Swimmer and later there was a break between them. The approximately one and a half hour film was only released in cinemas in 1984 under the title Queen - We Will Rock You . Against the will of the band, a VHS version of the concert film was released . Other video and DVD versions were later released. Brian May repeatedly criticized Swimmer's release policy and expressed dissatisfaction that Queen had no control over the film for legal reasons.

DVD "Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid"

In cooperation with the Eagle Rock label, the band acquired the rights to this concert film in 2006. The pictures have been digitally restored. A fundamental redesign of the film was not possible because the footage that had been lost during editing was no longer available. The sound has been remixed from the original multitrack tapes for DTS surround sound and PCM stereo. In addition to the concert recording, the single DVD Queen Rock Montreal contains new accompanying audio commentary by Brian May and Roger Taylor. The double DVD Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid also includes the full playback of Queen's famous performance at the Live Aid benefit concert on July 13, 1985 at Wembley Stadium in London . This edition also includes excerpts from Queen's rehearsals for Live Aid ( Hammer to Fall , Bohemian Rhapsody and Radio Ga Ga ) as well as an interview with the group at the time. Queen played the following pieces during their show, which lasted just over 20 minutes:

  1. Bohemian Rhapsody (Mercury)
  2. Radio Ga Ga (Taylor)
  3. Hammer to Fall (May)
  4. Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Mercury)
  5. We Will Rock You (May)
  6. We Are the Champions (Mercury)

As part of the Live Aid Final at Wembley Stadium, Freddie Mercury sang Queen's song Is This the World We Created, accompanied by Brian May on acoustic guitar .

As a bonus, this DVD also features a 1982 TV report about Queen from the US TV series PM Magazine , in which the band members also have their say. In 2007 the concert film was released in HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats .

Reviews in the media

Movie Queen - We Will Rock You

Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Switzerland), 1984: “Swimmer, like few music film directors, knows how to capture and reproduce the atmosphere of a rock concert and to emphasize the musical qualities of a group and its 'appeal' to the audience. [...] The film carries you away, is entertaining, is rock music entertainment par excellence . "

Filmdienst (Germany), 1984: “The group members' own compositions are combined with old rock'n'roll titles to create a narcissistic self-portrayal of the successful band, who like themselves in exotic, bombastic and questionable costumes and décor. No uninteresting pleasure for fans of the music group. "

Video Queen - We Will Rock You

All Music Guide (USA), by Greg Prato: "[...], We Will Rock You is an excellent document of the latter-day Queen in concert [...] one of Queen's best in-concert home videos."

DVD Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid

Classic Rock (Great Britain), 2007, by Paul Elliott: “As a live act Queen were pretty much unbeatable and here's the proof. […] It's a brilliant performance, […]! The second disc has the legendary Live Aid set that confirmed Queen as the masters of stadium rock. [...] this really is an essential purchase. "(9/10)

Sources and Notes

  1. a b c Brian May: "Saul Swimmer had the idea that he could film a Queen concert, in a very high quality 35 mm double anamorphic way, and project the resulting film onto a huge screen three stories high, in an arena, and Charge people to come and see it, like a concert. […] So, against our will, the VHS version […] was put out around 1984. Of course the concert had not been shot with this in mind. […] It was transferred at the wrong speed on to video, so the whole thing ran at the wrong pitch. We made lots of complaints, […]… the video was a thorn in our side for 25 years… out there with our name on - but something we had no control over. [...] Finally, we bought the whole thing off Swimmer last year with the kind help of Eagle Rock . [...] Saul Swimmer's editors made their selection of shots to use, and the footage they left on the cutting room floor has never been seen again. So no proper re-edit of the visuals was possible. [...], bits of songs are missing, and the whole of 'Flash' and 'The Hero' will never be seen because the visuals don't exist. […] It's one of only three concerts of Queen captured on FILM rather than crappy non-hi-res digital - they are: Live at the Rainbow in 1974, this concert, and Budapest in 1986 […]. “ - Brian's draft speech ( Memento of the original from November 3, 2007 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link was automatically inserted and not yet checked.
