I'm in Love with my Car is a song by the English rock band Queen that was released on their fourth album A Night at the Opera . It is the only song on the album written by drummer Roger Taylor .

background

Taylor, who also sang the main voice, played the guitar in the demo version, this part was later taken over by Brian May and recorded with his self-made Red Special guitar. The engine noises come from Taylor's car at the time, an Alfa Romeo . Taylor inspired one of the band's roadies , Johnathan Harris, to create the lyrics . Its triumph TR4 has been called the love of his life. When Queen released the first single from the new album and the choice fell on Freddie Mercury's " Bohemian Rhapsody ", Taylor urged the lead singer to publish his song as the B-side to Bohemian Rhapsody . In an interview, he later said that he locked himself in a closet for this purpose until Mercury agreed. I'm in Love with my Car quickly became a crowd-pleaser and played a lot during live performances between 1977 and 1981. Taylor sang from his drums, Mercury stayed at the piano.

In 2004 the song was used in a commercial for the Jaguar car brand . The title of the song is used as a kind of running gag in the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). The text is initially taken up in a conversation between Taylor ( Ben Hardy ) and May ( Gwilym Lee ). Later in the film, May asked Taylor what the "sexiest" part of a car was. The piece can also be heard in the BBC / Amazon Prime co-production Good Omens (2019) and humorously sums up the main character Crowley's deep affection for his classic car - Bentley . In the entire miniseries, as in the original book , demon Crowley reveals himself to be a great admirer of Queen, who always loudly plays Queen anthems while driving.

reception

Tom Reynolds (Chicago Review Press) named the song in 2008 as one of the best love songs he had heard in the past 30 years.

The music critic of the online music database AllMusic , Donald Guarisco, described the song as one of the "solid, impressive rock songs" that drummer Taylor has "reliably contributed to every Queen album", and as arguably the "best known example of his skills". He also emphasized that the changing musical background between "slowly strutting hard rock tones" in the stanzas and "exuberant ascending" refrains fit perfectly with the "macho tone" of the "often ambiguous text" and sums up its "growing ecstasy in a stylish musical way". The “later concert favorite” is a “highlight” of the album.
