The soundtrack contains several hits of the group Queen , but also some unreleased recordings, including several tracks from the performance of the group at Live Aid in 1985. The film itself is celebrating on 23 October 2018 the London Wembley Arena premiered, was born on 31 October 2018 in German, Swiss and Austrian cinemas and on November 2, 2018 in US cinemas.

Emergence

The music on the soundtrack was compiled for the film Bohemian Rhapsody by Bryan Singer . The Queen singer Freddie Mercury is played by Rami Malek , who doesn't actually sing in the film. This is Queen's second full original soundtrack album after the 1980 album for Flash Gordon . The album includes re-recordings of Queen classics and a selection of the band's best studio recordings. Among them are some of Queen's greatest hits, including all eleven songs that have reached number one worldwide. The soundtrack was produced by Brian May and Roger Taylor , who were assisted in their work by longtime Queen Studio staff Justin Shirley-Smith , Kris Fredriksson and Joshua J. Macrae . The recordings were mastered by Adam Ayan and Bob Ludwig . The main task of the team behind the soundtrack was to find the most suitable versions of the band's songs, especially live performances, to match the moving story of the script. The result was not a greatest hits playlist, but also a soundtrack album that is independent and emphasizes important moments in the script. Based on these recordings, main actor Rami Malek was able to rehearse not only the singing, but also facial expressions and posture. While Malek had sung himself during the filming, the soundalike was used in post-production .

The duet by Freddie Mercury and Brian May in Love of My Life comes from the Rock in Rio festival in 1985

So that the audience had no doubt that they were hearing a soundtrack album, May came up with the idea of recording a version of the famous "Fox Fanfare" by 20th Century Fox , which was specially arranged for it . This version, created with May's guitar playing and Roger Taylor's distinctive percussion, can be heard as the opening track in the film and is the first track on the album. While the songs can only be heard in part in the film, the soundtrack contains the complete versions. The five tracks of a 21-minute performance by Queen on Live Aid on July 13, 1985 have never been released in audio form before. The recording of Fat Bottomed Girls is from the Paris shows in 1979, part of the Jazz World Tour, and has never been released before. Now I'm Here was recorded on the band's Christmas show at Hammersmith Odeon, London in 1975. The duet by Freddie Mercury and May in Love of My Life comes from the Rock in Rio festival in January 1985. In the film, a studio version of We Will Rock You fades seamlessly into a live performance. The rehearsal version of Bohemian Rhapsody , the eponymous song written by Freddie Mercury for the album A Night at the Opera , is in the studio in a mix of live vocal recordings and the original voice of the Queen frontman, Malek's own recorded voice and that of the Canadian singer and Freddie Mercury impersonator Marc Martel. The latter has been the lead singer of a Queen tribute band called The Queen Extravaganza since 2013 and is known for his vocal resemblance to the rock icon. Doing All Right was originally recorded by Smile , Queen's predecessor band, in which May and Taylor worked with singer Tim Staffell. To recreate the original Smile version of Doing All Right , May and Taylor met with Staffell at Abbey Road Studios for a recording, almost 50 years after the original Smile recording.

reception

Tatiana Tenreyro of bustle.com thinks what this film soundtrack so special was doing was that he both studio and live versions of the songs, like those of the Live Aid performance of the band at Wembley, combine, resulting in the film feel realistic. In addition, the soundtrack makes the listener ponder the importance of the legacy of Freddie Mercury .

Thomas Raab of PC Games says that the songs used in the film accentuate the story, which in turn tells the story of how the songs came about: “Plot and music are harmoniously intertwined, the latter basically forming the soundtrack to Freddie Mercury's life and work. The die-hard Queen fan may feel angry that one or the other title has been chronologically in the wrong place. Many of Freddie's life events that were taken up in Bohemian Rhapsody also took place in other years. But dramaturgically these adjustments make sense. In particular, in the end they do not falsify anything in Mercury's life, but rather reinforce what made the Queen frontman so special: on stage an extroverted giant, a musical phenomenon, in private, on the other hand, a shy, shy person who has been on the Search for love and real affection was. "

Manfred Riepe from epd Film explains that in the film the origin of the individual songs is reconstructed in anecdotal form, and that the media-constructed image that already exists of the group and its figurehead is hardly shaken. “ Bohemian Rhapsody is a meticulously staged audiovisual journey through time that revives the emotions when listening to the Queen hits at the time. Like many rock films, Bohemian Rhapsody has a nostalgia for postponement. The sound of the unmistakable beat of We Will Rock You, for example, gives you goose bumps. "
